Myers moves from Cornell to Otterbein

Linda Myers, head women's tennis coach at Cornell, has been selected as head women's tennis coach at Otterbein.

Myers has been head coach and physical education instructor at Cornell since 1988. During her tenure there, she built the women's tennis program from a club sport into one of the top varsity programs in the Ivy Group. Her 1996 squad made it to the semifinals of the NCAA Division I East regional with a 15-3 record.

A 1982 graduate of Cortland State, Myers earned a bachelor's degree in physical education while receiving four letters in tennis. She earned a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio State.

Myers began her coaching career at Colby, serving as head women's and men's tennis coach from 1984 through 1985. She then moved to Albany (New York), coaching women's tennis from 1985 to 1988. She was named coach of the year in 1985 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Brother Craig Franz, dean of sciences and mathematics at St. Mary's (Minnesota), named president at St. Mary's (California), effective July 1 ... Jerry Farley appointed president at Washburn, effective July 1. Farley is vice-president for community relations and economic development at Oklahoma ... Thomas Meredith, president at Western Kentucky, selected as chancellor of the University of Alabama system, effective June 1 ... St. Joseph's (New York) announced the resignation of Sister George Aquin O'Connor as president, effective June 30 ... Larry Williams selected as president at Northeastern State, effective July 1. Williams is president at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Ted Aceto resigned as athletics director at Florida International, effective March 1. Aceto has been at the university since being named AD in April 1993 ... Texas Tech interim AD Gerald Myers named athletics director at the school. Before becoming interim AD last June, Myers served as associate AD. He previously served as men's basketball coach at Texas Tech.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

UTEP announced the resignation of Sue Glatter as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator.

COACHES

Men's basketball--Mercer announced the retirement of head coach Bill Hodges, effective at the end of this season. Hodges, who took Mercer to the Trans America Athletic Conference championship game in 1995 and 1996, compiled a 62-104 record during his six seasons there. He also coached Indiana State to the championship game of the 1979 Final Four.

Women's basketball--Dubuque announced the resignation of Jay Schiesl, effective at the end of the season.

Men's and women's fencing--UC San Diego appointed dual fencing coaches to succeed Lisa Posthumus, who resigned. Chuck Alexander and Mike Aiao will share head coaching duties. Both were assistant coaches last year.

Football--Bill Schmitz appointed head coach at Austin Peay State. Schmitz has been head coach at Coast Guard for the past four seasons. Roy Gregory, Austin Peay State coach for the past six years, became director of athletics marketing and promotions at the school.

Football assistants--Western Carolina announced these coaching assignments: Ted Roof named defensive coordinator and linebackers coach after serving in those positions for the past three seasons at Massachusetts; Maury Waugh, running backs coach at Pacific (California) in 1995, named assistant head coach and defensive ends coach; Thomas Woods, wide receivers coach last season at Appalachian State, selected as wide receivers coach; and Michael Gunthrop, offensive line coach at Eastern Arizona, assigned the same duties at Western Carolina ... Ron Aiken, defensive line coach at Vanderbilt for the past two seasons, joined the staff at Texas ... Ronnie Jones promoted from receivers coach to defensive coordinator at UTEP. Jones, former defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals, is in his second year at UTEP ... LSU running backs coach Mike Haywood given additional duties as special-teams coordinator. Haywood has been at LSU since January 1995 ... Steve Kidd, a member of Rice's all-time football team in the Southwest Conference, promoted to assistant coach at his alma mater. Kidd had been administrative assistant for football during the past three years ... George Belu hired as offensive line coach and Hank Small named offensive coordinator at Wake Forest ... Dave Doeren appointed defensive coordinator and Dale Ploessl named offensive coordinator at Drake ... Northern Iowa hired Jay Niemann as secondary coach and Paul Haynes as running backs coach ... Texas A&M announced the resignation of offensive coordinator Mike Sherman.

Men's golf--Alumnus Mark Clouse named head men's coach at Mankato State, succeeding Jerry Carpenter, who took a position with a country club in St. Peter, Minnesota. Carpenter had led the men's program since 1988. Clouse was an all-conference and all-district golfer at Mankato State. He is in his third year as a golf professional at North Links Golf Course and a faculty member at Waldorf College.

Women's golf--Jim Johnson selected to lead the new women's golf program at Tarleton State. Johnson has been head women's volleyball coach but will relinquish those duties. He will continue as men's athletics coordinator and compliance coordinator. Johnson was head men's golf coach at Tarleton State until the program was eliminated in 1995.

Women's lacrosse--Bonnie Rosen, assistant lacrosse coach at Yale for the past two seasons, named head coach at Connecticut. Rosen was a member of Virginia's 1991 Division I championship team and is a six-year member of the United States Lacrosse Elite Team.

Men's and women's soccer--Tom Lang, head men's coach at Fairleigh Dickinson for the past seven seasons, named head coach at Southern Connecticut State ... David Hoffman appointed head men's and women's coach at Schreiner, replacing Steve Dart.

Women's softball assistants--Akron hired Sue Kunkle as assistant coach and appointed Jeff Kurtz as volunteer assistant coach ... Marni Shea selected as assistant coach at Russell Sage. Shea was a four-year member of the softball team at Keene State.

Men's tennis--Mark Passman hired as head coach at Manhattanville. Passman has been a senior tennis professional at Rye (New York) Racquet Club since 1989 and head tennis pro at the Gypsy Trail Club in Carmel, New York. He also owns a company that teaches tennis to individuals at their homes.

Men's and women's track and field--North Texas announced the resignation of Ken Garland as track and field director. Rick Watkins was named interim director.

Men's and women's track and field assistant--Jim VanHootegem hired as assistant track coach at Texas-Pan American. VanHootegem has been administrative assistant to the track and cross country coach at Arkansas for the past two years.

Men's and women's volleyball--UC San Diego head women's coach Duncan McFarland given additional duties as head men's coach ... Jim Johnson, head women's coach at Tarleton State, named head women's golf coach at the university. He will relinquish his volleyball duties but continue as compliance and men's athletics coordinator ... Valeria Hackett promoted to full-time head women's coach at Montevallo after serving as interim coach during the 1996 season.

Women's volleyball assistant--Qi Wang named assistant coach at Truman State. Wang, who played for the National Young Men's Volleyball Team of China, was volunteer graduate assistant coach at Eastern New Mexico from 1994 through 1996.

STAFF

Athletic training services director--Jeff Fair, head athletic trainer at Oklahoma State for the past 25 years, named director of athletic training services at Navy. Fair replaces Red Romo, who is retiring after 41 years.

Athletic trainer--Richard Biediger named head athletic trainer at Schreiner, replacing Patty Putnam. Biediger trained weight lifters at the Atlanta Olympics.

Assistant athletic trainer--Dee Jones, an assistant athletic trainer at Navy for the past 10 years, promoted to associate head trainer for football. Jones joined the Navy staff in 1987.

CORRECTIONS

Hal Brown, associate dean and director of community economic development at San Diego State's business school, elected president of the 1997 Plymouth Holiday Bowl, succeeding Nikki Clay, who becomes chairman of the board. Brown has been a member of the Holiday Bowl Board of Directors since 1990.

Harold Nazaire, a sophomore opposite hitter for New Jersey Institute of Technology, named men's volleyball player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. During the week, Nazaire hit .460 and tallied 57 kills, 21 digs, eight blocks and seven aces.

Natalie Steadman of Texas Tech and John Wesley Harvey of Texas Southern appointed to fill six-year terms on the Texas Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers. Steadman is director of sports medicine and head athletic trainer at Texas Tech. Harvey is a trainer for the Houston Oilers in addition to his duties at Texas Southern.

CLINIC

A coaches clinic commemorating the 25th anniversary of Immaculata's first national women's basketball championship is scheduled April 26 on the college campus. Cathy Rush, head coach of the 1972 championship team, and players from the "glory days" who are now nationally known coaches will present a clinic open to women's basketball coaches at all levels. Among the presenting coaches are Illinois' Theresa Shank Grentz, California's Marianne Crawford Stanley and Penn State's Rene Muth Portland. Enrollment is limited. DEATHS

Irwin Vince "I. V." Davis, former director of athletics and head football coach at St. Francis (Pennsylvania), died February 10 in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Davis became head football coach at the school in 1949 and continued coaching until 1953, when he was named athletics director. He retired in 1979. Davis was inducted into the first class of the St. Francis athletics hall of fame last November.

Christopher Roulhac Jr., former athletics director and football and track coach at Albany State (Georgia), died February 12 in Philadelphia. He was 80. Roulhac coached Olympian Alice Coachman, the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal, and was scheduled to be with her when she was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame February 14.

John Turner Jr., a member of the Lynchburg sports hall of fame, died February 16 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was 88. Turner, a member of the Lynchburg track team as an undergraduate, became dean of the college, a position he held for 20 years. He was named college vice-president in 1972 and retired in 1974. Lynchburg's gymnasium is named for Turner.

Delaney Kiphuth, former athletics director at Yale and one of the first administrators of the Ivy Group, died February 12 in Hamden, Connecticut. He was 78. Kiphuth was appointed AD at Yale in 1954 and continued in the position until retiring in 1976. He, along with the ADs from the other seven institutions that formed the Ivy Group in 1956, were the league's first administrators.
