Former NCAA officer dies in Washington

Samuel E. Barnes, secretary-treasurer of the NCAA from 1971 through 1972 and a retired professor of physical education and health, died January 21 in Washington, D.C. He was 81.

Barnes was head of the physical education department and a teacher at Howard for 24 years before moving to District of Columbia, where he taught for 10 years until his retirement in 1981. He received an award from District of Columbia for outstanding service as chair of the university's athletics advisory committee.

Barnes earned undergraduate and master's degrees at Oberlin and a doctorate in physical education at Ohio State.

He began his teaching career at Livingstone before World War II and later taught summers at South Carolina State. He was sent by the U.S. State Department as a "sports ambassador" to supervise athletics program development in Middle Eastern countries in the 1950s.

Barnes served on the board of the U.S. Olympic Committee in 1972.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Sue Huseman, president of Monmouth (Illinois), resigned to become vice-chancellor for academic affairs in the University of Maine system ... Roger Martin, president of Moravian, named president at Randolph-Macon, effective July 1. Martin is a former member of the NCAA Presidents Commission ... Nebraska Wesleyan announced the appointment of Jeanie Watson as president, effective July 1. Watson has been dean of H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College at Tulane.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Edward Markey, athletics director at St. Michael's for 29 years, announced his retirement. Markey was appointed AD in 1968, when the college was all male and offered six varsity sports. Today, St. Michael's has 20 intercollegiate teams for women and men. A 1951 graduate of the college, Markey returned as assistant to the AD in 1955 and later was head men's basketball coach.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Ron Maier, head football coach at Albright, named associate athletics director for overall recruiting in the athletics department.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Lamar appointed alumnus Leslie Clark as assistant athletics director for academic affairs. Clark has been a member of the Lamar staff since her graduation in 1992, first as a teaching fellow and most recently as a lecturer in English and foreign languages ... Delise O'Meally promoted to assistant AD for internal operations at Morgan State. O'Meally was hired as assistant sports information director at the university in 1993 and named compliance coordinator in 1994 ... West Chester named assistant football coach Michael Matta as interim assistant AD. Matta joined the West Chester football staff in 1992 ... Maryelizabeth Grace appointed assistant AD/senior woman administrator at St. Francis (Pennsylvania). Grace was a graduate teaching assistant, compliance assistant and administrative assistant to the associate athletics director/
senior woman administrator while at Florida. She was a member of the women's track and field team and the ski club at Brown.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Julie Sandoval, Cal State Dominguez Hills women's volleyball coach, named full-time senior woman administrator/
compliance coordinator there. Sandoval, who came to Cal State Dominguez Hills two years ago, has been serving part time as SWA/compliance coordinator during the past year, in addition to coaching ... Maryelizabeth Grace appointed assistant AD/senior woman administrator at St. Francis (Pennsylvania). Grace was a graduate teaching assistant, compliance assistant and administrative assistant to the associate athletics director/SWA while at Florida. She was a member of the women's track and field team and the ski club at Brown.

COACHES

Baseball--Jay Lewis named interim baseball coach at Wittenberg, replacing Rick Willis, who became head football coach at Wartburg. Lewis, a 1994 Wittenberg graduate, was assistant coach last season.

Men's basketball--Jacksonville announced that George Scholz, who was temporarily reassigned within the athletics department in December, will not return as head coach. Buster Harvey, who has been serving as interim head coach, will continue in that capacity for the remainder of the season ... Bill Ball, who took over the men's program at Arkansas-Monticello on an interim basis December 6, selected as head coach after leading his team to its first win in nearly a year. Ball has been an assistant coach at the community college level and also a graduate assistant at Delta State.

Field hockey assistant--Kevin Cooke, field hockey assistant for the past 11/2 years at Nazareth, named as a graduate assistant coach for women's lacrosse at Alfred. Cooke also was assistant women's lacrosse coach at Nazareth.

Football--Rick Willis, an assistant coach for the past seven years and defensive coordinator since 1993 at Wittenberg, hired as head coach at Wartburg. Willis succeeds Steve Hagen, who resigned after one year to become quarterbacks coach at San Jose State ... Albright promoted E. J. Sandusky to head coach, succeeding Ron Maier, who became associate athletics director for overall recruiting. Sandusky was offensive line coach last season ... Langston head coach Greg Johnson announced his resignation after 11 seasons at the school -- including the past six as head coach -- to accept another coaching position ... Clark Atlanta announced the resignation of Willie Hunter and the promotion of assistant coach Elmer Mixon to head coach. Hunter became head coach in 1989 and compiled a 30-40-1 record. Mixon, chair of the physical education department at Clark Atlanta, has been at the school for more than 25 years as a player, teacher and coach ... Capital appointed Jim Collins as head coach, replacing Roger Welsh, who resigned to spend more time as athletics director and fund-raiser at Capital. Collins was head coach at Dubuque for the past three seasons.

Football assistants--Chris Woods promoted to defensive coordinator at Wittenberg, succeeding Rick Willis, who became head baseball coach. Woods was linebackers coach at Wittenberg last season ... Valdosta State named Mark Nelson as defensive coordinator. Nelson coached for the last five seasons in the Canadian Football League ... Rob Spence hired as offensive coordinator at Hofstra. Spence previously served in that post at Hofstra in 1990, then as quarterbacks coach for one year at Holy Cross. He has been at Maryland for the past five years, first as inside receivers and tight ends coach and later as quarterbacks coach ... Houston announced several changes on its football staff: Tyrone Dixon promoted to assistant head coach, succeeding Neil Callaway; Clay Helton named running backs coach after serving on the offensive staff at Duke for the past two seasons; Danny Palmer, a five-year veteran of the Houston staff, named linebackers coach; three-year veteran Gary Bartel moved to defensive coordinator; and Dan Lounsbury, quarterbacks coach, named offensive coordinator ... Pat Perles hired as defensive line coach at Kent. Perles was assistant coach for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League for the past two seasons ... Tony Pierce selected as running backs coach at West Virginia. Pierce was defensive secondary coach at Pittsburgh for the past two seasons.

Men's golf--Ron Childs hired as head men's golf coach at Manhattan. Childs is golf pro at Moscholu Golf Course in the Bronx, New York.

Men's and women's lacrosse--Denna Stachelek named head women's coach at Alfred. Stachelek was head coach at Indiana last fall and a high-school coach before that.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants--Bill Grant named assistant coach at Keuka. Grant, a 1996 Elmira graduate, started for the Elmira men's lacrosse team three out of his four years there ... Kevin Cooke named as a graduate assistant coach for women's lacrosse at Alfred. Cooke was assistant women's lacrosse and field hockey coach for the past 11/2 years at Nazareth.

Men's and women's soccer--Carlo Tramontozzi named head men's coach at Staten Island. Tramontozzi was head coach at St. Francis (New York) for 20 years ... Dave Urban hired as head women's coach and assistant men's soccer coach at Eastern. Urban, who was a two-time captain and most valuable player for the men's soccer program at Eastern, has coached at the high-school level ... Messiah promoted Dave Brandt to head men's coach, succeeding Layton Shoemaker, who retired after leading the Messiah men's team for 23 years. Brandt has been on the Falcon staff for the past nine years, the first six as an assistant and the remainder as associate head coach.

Women's softball--Kim Wilson, head coach at Washington and Jefferson for the past six years, selected as head coach at Rowan. Wilson's 1996 team finished 26-5 and won the Presidents' Athletic Conference championship. She also was head women's soccer coach.

Men's tennis--Todd Landrey given additional duties as head men's tennis coach at Newberry. Landrey is completing his first year as assistant men's basketball coach there.

Men's and women's track and field assistant--Rebecca Grube Eberly appointed assistant men's and women's track and field coach at West Chester. A track champion at Virginia as an undergraduate, Grube Eberly is training for the world championships in Athens, Greece.

Women's volleyball--Julie Sandoval, head coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills, promoted to senior woman administrator/compliance coordinator at the school. She had been serving in that capacity on a part-time basis during the past year. Sandoval served as head coach for two seasons ... Peter Volkert appointed head coach at Manhattan. Volker was head coach at Pace from 1994 to 1996 ... Sharon Sims selected as head coach at Wilmington (Ohio) ... Cindy Brauck named head coach at Missouri Western State. Brauck has been head coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay for the past six seasons.

STAFF

Development director--Deborah Anekstein named director of athletics development at West Chester. She also will be the executive director of the Rams Athletic Association. Anekstein has been assistant to the athletics director since 1993.

Marketing assistant--Angela Baumann hired as assistant director of athletics marketing at Montana State. Baumann previously served as coordinator of special programs and publicity and then as interim director of marketing at East Carolina, where she joined the staff in 1994. She also has been a marketing assistant at Ohio State.

NOTABLES

Basketball coach Don Haskins of UTEP and retired Princeton coach Pete Carril elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Haskins, head coach at UTEP for 36 years, has compiled a 687-322 record and seven conference titles. Carril, now an assistant with the NBA Sacramento Kings, amassed a 525-273 record in 29 years of collegiate coaching before retiring last spring.

The Poulan/Weed Eater Independence Bowl announced the 1997 inductees into the Independence Bowl Hall of Honor. They are Ken Hatfield, head coach at Rice, for Air Force's appearance in the 1983 game; Brett Favre, 1988 game for Southern Mississippi; Larry Anderson, 1977 game for Louisiana Tech; and Tony Tolbert, 1988 game for UTEP.

Mindy Stanley, a women's volleyball player at Ball State, and Bernd Zeruhn, a swimmer at Minnesota, named Division I men's and women's Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athletes of the year. The athletes were selected for demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics and community service.

Rob Treahy, a senior middle blocker for UC Santa Barbara, named national player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Winners of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Umbro national player of the year awards are Mike Fisher, Virginia, Division I men; Rick Koczak, Southern Connecticut State, Division II men; Brad Murray, Williams, Division III men; Jennifer Renola, Notre Dame, Division I women; Deshaunne Running, Denver, Division II women; and Ele Johnson, UC San Diego, Division III women.

Neil Tarangioli, director of tennis at Concordia (New York), named outstanding Hudson Valley Section member by the United States Professionals Tennis Association-Eastern Division Awards. The award recognizes a person who has made significant contributions to tennis as well as to the USTPA.

The All-American Football Foundation, Inc., announced several award recipients. Col. Buddy Elrod, Mississippi State's first all-American football player, received the Admiral Thomas J. Hamilton Award. Named outstanding assistant coaches were Bill Canty of Furman and Mississippi; Jim Coleman of Mississippi College; Ray Poole of Mississippi; Sam Bailey of Alabama; John Shelton of Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt; Carl Torbush of Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi and North Carolina; and Joe Gilliam Sr. of Jackson State and Tennessee State. Named outstanding athletic trainer was Larry Harrington, retired athletic trainer at Southern Mississippi.
