Zalokar to retire after 36 years at Carthage

Ron Zalokar, a coach at Carthage for 36 years, announced his retirement, effective at the end of the 1996-97 tennis season.

Zalokar joined the Carthage staff in 1961 as the college's first wrestling coach and tallied a 204-235 dual-meet mark as the only coach in the program's 33-year history (1961 to 1994).

Since 1980, Zalokar has been head women's tennis coach. His career women's tennis record stands at 204-138.

In addition to wrestling and women's tennis, Zalokar has served as head men's and women's track and field coach, assistant track and field coach, and assistant football coach.

Zalokar also served as a professor in the department of exercise and sport science and as the assistant director for physical education. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Monmouth (Illinois), master's degrees in PE from Southern Illinois and in biology from Western Illinois, and a doctorate in education from Marquette.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Wendell Rayburn Sr., president of Lincoln (Missouri), appointed vice-president for administration and finance at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Rayburn is a member of the NCAA Presidents Commission and the Division II Presidents Council Transition Team ... John Grinalds named president at Citadel. Grinalds has been headmaster of Woodberry Forest School in Virginia and is a retired major general in the U.S. Marines ... Manuel Pacheco announced his resignation as president at Arizona, effective December 31 ... Arthur Smith, president at Utah, selected chancellor of the University of Houston system and president of the main campus, effective April 1. Jerilyn McIntyre, vice-president for academic affairs at Utah, was named interim president there ... Portland State's Judith Ramaley appointed president at Vermont. Ramaley is a member of the Presidents Commission and the Division II Presidents Council Transition Team ... South Dakota State announced the retirement of President Robert Wagner, effective January 1, 1998 ... Delbert Weber, chancellor of Nebraska-Omaha, announced his retirement, effective June 30 ... R. Thomas Williamson, executive vice-president at Clarkson, named president at Westminster (Pennsylvania), effective July 1.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Longtime Eastern Washington athletics administrator and coach Dick Zornes named athletics director at the school, succeeding John Johnson, who accepted a position at Weber State. Zornes became AD in January 1991 but relinquished the post in March 1993 to Johnson because of the demands of serving as both director and head football coach. After the 1993 season, Zornes resigned as head coach and became assistant AD for internal affairs.

COACHES

Baseball assistants--Charles Horan appointed assistant coach at Massachusetts Maritime. Horan has coached at the high-school level and for a senior Babe Ruth League team ... Mike Birkbeck, a former major-league pitcher, named pitching coach at Kent. A 14-year veteran of professional baseball, Birkbeck replaces Dick Schoonover, who became a pitching instructor with the World Series Baseball Training Center.

Women's basketball--Gina Markland, Coastal Carolina head coach for 11 seasons, announced her resignation, effective at the end of the 1996-97 season. Markland will remain at the school as assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator.

Men's and women's cross country--Geoff Masanet named head men's and women's cross country coach at Missouri-Kansas City, succeeding Phil Byrne, who resigned to accept a position with the American Heart Association. Masanet has been head coach at Northeastern Illinois for the past two years ... Rich Davis selected as men's cross country coach at Dayton. Davis has coached junior high and high-school track, cross country, wrestling and football.

Field hockey--Kerry Horgan, assistant field hockey coach at Wake Forest for the past three years, hired as head coach at Kent. She replaces Jennifer Jones-Goodrich, who resigned.

Football--Southern Utah named former Thunderbird offensive coordinator
C. Ray Gregory as head coach. Gregory left Southern Utah in November after one season to join the staff at Georgia Southern ... David Elsenrath appointed head coach at Adams State. Elsenrath had been an assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky for the past two seasons. He succeeds Jeff Geiser, who resigned as head coach near the end of last season but retained his teaching duties and moved into an assistant coaching capacity ... Bob Babich named head coach at North Dakota State, succeeding R. E. "Rocky" Hager, who resigned. Babich coached linebackers for the past three seasons at Pittsburgh. Hager had been head coach since 1987 and led the team to Division II titles in 1988 and 1990.

Football assistants--Larry Kueck hired as offensive coordinator at Southern Mississippi. Kueck was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Marshall last season ... Hardee McCrary given additional duties as defensive coordinator at Rice, succeeding Wally Ake, who was named defensive coordinator at Maryland. McCrary has been on the Rice staff since 1993.

Men's and women's golf--St. Thomas (Minnesota) selected David Landry as head men's coach and Cathy Bremer Lombritto as women's coach. Landry replaces Joe Flood, who retired after 30 years. Lombritto, who has been an assistant professor of theology at St. Thomas for the past six years, played golf at Holy Cross. She replaces Tim Nickolay, who left the university to enter private business after six seasons as head women's coach. Lombritto had been head golf professional at Dellwood Hills Golf Club since 1987.

Men's lacrosse assistant--Chad Moore, a 1996 graduate member of the men's lacrosse team at Limestone, appointed assistant men's coach there.

Women's lacrosse--Amy Dawson, head women's coach during the past season at Whittier, resigned. She also was head women's soccer coach.

Men's soccer--Alan Dawson, an assistant coach at North Carolina, hired as head men's coach at Old Dominion. Before joining the North Carolina staff, Dawson was head coach at Methodist for nine years, compiling a 129-30-10 record.

Women's soccer--Whittier announced the resignation of head women's soccer coach Amy Dawson after one year. She also was head women's lacrosse coach ... John Vincent named head coach for the new women's soccer program at Southern Mississippi. Vincent, a native of London, holds playing and coaching credentials internationally and in the United States.

Women's softball--Massachusetts Maritime promoted assistant coach Elizabeth Fulcher to head coach. Fulcher replaces Walter Yohai, who resigned. She also has been an assistant coach at North Carolina-Charlotte ... Michael Bastian hired at Centenary (Louisiana), succeeding Laneigh Clark, who became head coach at Sam Houston State. Bastian spent the past year as a coach for the Women's Professional Fastpitch Tour.

Men's and women's tennis--Tom Maze given additional duties as head women's coach at Methodist, succeeding Theresa Warrell. Maze is in his second season as head men's coach. Warrell, women's coach for the past four years, remains at Methodist as director of the professional tennis management program ... David Nass named interim head men's and women's coach at North Carolina Central. For the last six years, Nass has been general manager of the Chapel Hill Tennis Club in Carrboro, North Carolina.

Men's and women's track and field--Central Missouri State appointed longtime assistant coaches Kirk Pedersen and Kip Janvrin as cohead coaches for the men's and women's programs. Pedersen, in his 11th season at the school, already heads the cross country program. Janvrin, a decathlete, is in his ninth season at Central Missouri State.

Women's volleyball--Pace announced the resignation of Pete Volkert.

ASSOCIATIONS

Ray Cieplik, men's soccer coach at Coast Guard, elected president of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Jay Engeln, a high-school principal and coach in Colorado Springs, Colorado, replaced Cieplik as vice-president for marketing. Jim Thieser, former head coach and current assistant coach at Castleton State, replaced Engeln as NSCA secretary. CONFERENCE MEMBERS

The Missouri Valley Conference admitted Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky as affiliate members in men's soccer. Membership is effective with the 1997 soccer season. The two schools played as members of the Sun Belt Conference in 1996, with Vanderbilt winning the league championship.

AGREEMENT

Hershey Chocolate USA has signed a sponsorship agreement with the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, making it the sponsor of the Hershey Kids Halftime Shootout at the 1997 men's basketball championship tournament.

SEMINARS

The second annual International Basketball Coaches Clinic will be presented June 9-13 on the Springfield campus by Basketball Projects Unlimited. Clinicians include Mike Jarvis of George Washington, Bill Foster of Virginia Tech, Garry St. Jean of the Sacramento Kings, and Mike Theulen and Naomi Graves of Springfield. The clinic will consist of presentations and roundtable discussions. Registration information is available by calling 508/620-7990.

NOTABLES

Ann Casey Johnstone and Herb Wimberly were honored by the College Golf Foundation and National Golf Coaches Association. Johnstone, a physical education instructor and head golf coach at Stephens and codirector of the Chapel Valley Golf Clinics for the past 20 years, received the Rolex/Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award for outstanding contributions to women's collegiate golf. Wimberly, who was golf coach at New Mexico State for more than 30 years, received the Rolex Honor Award for outstanding service and contributions to men's collegiate golf.

USA Baseball appointed three assistant coaches for the 1997 USA Baseball team: Mike Gillespie, Southern California, who will coach catchers and infielders; Larry Hays, Texas Tech, hitting coach; and Pat McMahon, Mississippi State, pitching coach. They will assist head coach Bob Milano of California.

Doug McBride, a 6-4 senior setter for Lewis, named men's national player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Jim and Opal Wespiser have endowed a full men's basketball scholarship at Miami (Ohio) in honor of former Redskin head basketball coach and athletics director Dick Shrider. The endowment is part of the Miami athletics department Endowment for Excellence program. Shrider was a coach and administrator at Miami for 32 years until his retirement in 1989.

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced the election of three new coaching members of the hall of fame. Scheduled for induction December 9 are the late Wally Butts, Georgia, who coached from 1939 to 1960; Don James, Kent and Washington, 1971 through 1992; and the late Bowden Wyatt, Wyoming, Arkansas and Tennessee, 1947 through 1962.

The All-American Football Foundation, Inc., announced recipients of its Johnny Vaught Award: Joe Aillet, Louisiana Tech; Billy Brewer, Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana Tech and Mississippi; Bobby Collins, Southern Mississippi and Southern Methodist; Paul Davis, Mississippi State; Ray Graves, Florida; Ralph Hatley, Memphis; John Merritt, Jackson State and Tennessee State; Jim Pittman, Tulane and Texas Christian; Dana Bible, Mississippi College, Nebraska and Texas; Horace McCool, Delta State; Shirley Majors, Sewanee (University of the South); and Dal Shealey, Richmond. Recipients of the Gen. Robert Reese Neyland Lifetime Achievement Award are Howard Gentry, Tennessee State; Vaughn Mancha, Livingston State and Florida State; Andrew "Scrappy" Moore, Tennessee-Chattanooga; Bernie Shively, Kentucky; Tad Smith, Mississippi; and Johnny Vaught, Mississippi.


DEATHS

Actor, television producer and director Sheldon Leonard died January 11 in California. He was 89. Leonard participated in water polo and swimming and diving at Syracuse before graduating in 1920. He was honored at the 1969 NCAA Convention along with other performing artists who had competed in intercollegiate athletics.

George Brown, former Case Reserve head football coach, died January 18 at an Ohio nursing home. Brown was 89. A 1931 graduate of Ohio and a member of the school's athletics hall of fame, Brown attended law school at Case Reserve and was football coach there until 1937. He officiated NFL games and college games in the Big Ten Conference and Mid-American Conference. After his playing and coaching days, Brown practiced law in Cleveland for more than six decades.

Joe Allen, one of only six Bradley men's basketball players to have his uniform retired, died January 28 of an apparent heart attack. He was 51. Allen, who played three varsity seasons from 1965 to 1968, still ranks sixth on the Braves' all-time scoring and rebounding lists. His uniform was retired in 1994 and he was inducted into the Bradley Hall of Fame. Allen was manager of the Peoria (Illinois) Alternative Charter School.
