Adrian's Caine named vice-chair of III Management Council

Stanley P. Caine, president of Adrian College, has been appointed vice-chair of the Division III Steering Committee of the NCAA Council and of the new Division III Management Council.

Because the steering committee will evolve into the Management Council, Caine will serve as vice-chair of that group until the Management Council officially comes into existence in August.

A member of the Council since 1995, Caine has been instrumental in the creation of the new Division III management structure through his service on the Division III Task Force to Review the NCAA Membership Structure.

Caine became president of Adrian in 1989 after serving as vice-president for academic affairs and professor of history at Hanover College since 1977.

He is a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and of the board of the National Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities of the United Methodist Church.

Caine earned an undergraduate degree at Macalester College and a master's degree and doctorate, both in history, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

After earning the doctorate, Caine became assistant professor of history at Lindenwood College, where he was elected outstanding faculty member in 1970. He moved to DePauw University in 1971, serving first as assistant professor of history and later as associate professor of history, director of graduate studies and acting assistant dean.

Caine was employed as a tennis professional at one time and was an active tournament player. He was elected to the Jacksonville (Illinois) High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992. He has served as chair of the board of directors of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

The Michigan Commission on Spanish Speaking Affairs presented Caine the Commission Tribute Award in 1992 for "outstanding contributions to the Hispanic community of Michigan."
