Virginia, Notre Dame standouts lead soccer all-America team
Three-time all-Americans Mike Fisher of Virginia and Jennifer Renola of Notre Dame headline the 1996 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/UMBRO all-America teams.
Fisher, a standout midfielder, has led the Cavaliers to two NCAA Division I men's championships and one third-place finish during his career. Renola, who finished as Notre Dame's all-time leader in goals-against average and shutouts, was in goal for the Fighting Irish during their championship run in 1995 and runner-up finish in 1996.
Both players also are NCAA Today's Top VIII honorees.
Division I women's champion North Carolina placed two players on the first team: forward Cindy Parlow and defender Staci Wilson. In addition to Renola, Notre Dame's Cindy Daws was selected as an all-American for a third consecutive season.
Division I men's champion St. John's (New York) placed midfielder Ben Hickey on the second team, while runner-up Florida International's Ignace Moleka was a first-team selection.
In Division II, national semifinalist Southern Connecticut State placed four players on the men's first team, including goalkeeper Rick Koczak and forward Itai Mor. The women's team features forwards Pauliina Miettinen and Anne Parnila from champion Franklin Pierce.
The Division III team includes forwards Jason Cairns of men's champion College of New Jersey and Ele Johnson of women's champion UC San Diego.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the UMBRO soccer merchandising company jointly announced the teams.
