St. Louis to host I wrestling championships in 2000
The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee has selected the Kiel Center in St. Louis, Missouri, as the site for the 2000 Division I Wrestling Championships. It is the first time St. Louis will host the championship.
The event will take place March 16-18, 2000. The University of Missouri, Columbia, and the St. Louis Sports Commission will host the event.
St. Louis joins two other cities as first-time hosts over the next four years. The championship will be hosted by the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1997 and Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1998.
Pennsylvania State University, the 1999 host, last hosted the event in 1968.
The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee made the final decisions concerning the year 2000 site after reviewing proposals from two cities.
Kevin McHugh, chair of the Wrestling Committee and athletics director at College of New Jersey, said the committee was "excited to see three new sites, Northern Iowa, Cleveland State and St. Louis, as first-time hosts for this event. Wrestling is very fortunate to have all these qualified cities representing this sport and continuing the tradition of great competition for the next four years."
Last year's host for the event was the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, at the Target Center.
