Acting for the Council, the Administrative Committee:
1. Approved a request from the University of California, Berkeley, to appeal to the Council during its January 10-11 meeting a decision of the Council Subcommittee on Initial-Eligibility Waivers. The committee noted that the appeal would be an in-person appeal, and that the institution would be represented by its faculty athletics representative (or other designated representative) and that the involved student-athlete and legal counsel also would be present at the appeal. It also was noted that the standard procedures for appeals to the Council would be followed in this instance.
2. Granted an incidental-expense waiver per Bylaw 16.13.1 to permit an institution to reimburse a student-athlete for the cost of replacing his university identification card that was misplaced by his study hall proctor.
3. Denied a request for an incidental-expense waiver per Bylaw 16.13.1 to permit an institution to pay transportation expenses to Nashville for the parents of a student-athlete who is receiving the Honda Inspirational Award at the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year dinner.
4. Denied an incidental-expense waiver per Bylaw 16.13.1 to permit an institution to reimburse a student-athlete's transportation expenses to attend his fiancee's grandfather's funeral.
5. Denied a request for an incidental-expense waiver per Bylaw 16.13.1 to permit an institution to pay a percentage of surgery expenses for a student-athlete who wishes to have the surgery conducted in the city in which the university is located, noting that the full cost would be covered by the student-athlete's insurance if she returned to her home for the surgery.
6. Granted an incidental-expense waiver per Bylaw 16.13.1 to permit an institution to provide transportation expenses for the spouse of a student-athlete who is being honored at the conference's sports banquet.
7. Agreed to ask Council member Edward G. Coll Jr. to present the report of the Council at the 1997 Convention.
8. Changed the January 2 telephone conference of the Administrative Committee to January 3 (2 p.m. Central time).
