MacKenzie retires after 29 years of soccer
John MacKenzie, head of the soccer program at Western Illinois for 29 years, retired December 31.
MacKenzie joined the Western Illinois coaching staff in 1968 and initially also served as assistant baseball coach. In addition to his regular-season coaching, he took Western Illinois soccer teams on exhibition tours in foreign countries, including Germany, Austria and Israel.
During his tenure with the Leathernecks, MacKenzie compiled a 228-227-26 record. He is a graduate of Springfield, where he played soccer and helped lead his team to the 1957 national championship.
After the 1988 and 1995 seasons, MacKenzie was named Midwest coach of the year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. In 1995, he also received the Bill Jeffrey Award from the NSCAA for outstanding service and achievement in college soccer.
MacKenzie served as chair of the NCAA Men's and Women's Soccer Rules Committee and was a member of the NSCAA.

Douglas Bennett, vice-president of the American Council of Learned Societies, named president at Earlham, effective July 1, 1997.
DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Barry Gallup, athletics director and head football coach at Northeastern, will return to coaching full time after holding both positions for three years. Gallup, who has been head football coach for six years, will continue in the dual role until a new AD is hired ... Pittsburg State head football coach Chuck Broyles given additional duties as athletics director, effective when Bill Samuels retires in the spring. Broyles has been head football coach since December 1989 and also has served as an associate AD for personnel ... William Kaiser, director of athletics and recreation at Seattle, named AD at Potsdam State, succeeding William Donohue. Kaiser also has been AD at Goucher.
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Russell Sage appointed Tina Phillips as its new assistant director of athletics and recreation. Phillips also will be head softball coach. She has been assistant director of youth services and an instructor for the American Red Cross since 1993 and has coached basketball, volleyball and softball at the high-school level since 1990.
COACHES
Baseball--Sean Leary, acting head coach last season at Lehigh, appointed head coach. Leary was an assistant coach for two years before being named acting head coach following the death of Tom Morgan. He is a 1993 graduate of Lehigh.
Baseball assistants--Jerry Mack, who has coached at many levels in the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, area, named assistant coach at Lehigh and Andy Pitsilos named as a graduate assistant ... Troy Steffy and Mark Heckaman hired as assistant coaches at Franklin & Marshall. Steffy, who was a scout for the Houston Astros, will coach pitchers and catchers. Heckaman, head coach at Lancaster Bible College, will assist with team defense, hitting and base-running and coach first base.
Men's basketball--Roger Reid dismissed at Brigham Young, where he won at least 20 games in six of his seven seasons with the Cougars. Assistant coach Tony Ingle, an assistant to Reid for seven seasons and head coach before that at Alabama-Huntsville and Gordon, was named interim head coach. Reid led the Cougars to five Division I tournament appearances and three Western Athletic Conference titles ... Francis Marion announced the resignation of head coach Lewis Hill, effective at the conclusion of the 1996-97 season. Hill, in his 21st season at the school, had a 337-254 record as of December 3. Entering the 1996-97 season, he was ranked 16th in victories among active Division II coaches.
Men's basketball assistants--Pat Filien named assistant coach at Lock Haven. Filien has been an assistant at Southern Vermont since 1994 ... Frank Back hired as an assistant coach at Messiah. He has been an athletics director and head boys' basketball coach at the high-school level ... Jeremiah Henry joined the Franklin & Marshall coaching staff after a stellar playing career for the Diplomats. Henry broke all Franklin & Marshall records for career three-point shooting and was named the 1996 Centennial Conference player of the year.
Women's basketball--Angel Donley, assistant women's coach at Akron, named interim head coach to succeed Mary Ann Grimes, who requested reassignment. Donley, who is in her first season with the Zips, graduated from Northern Kentucky in 1995 after setting records as a member of the women's basketball team. She has coached at the high-school level.
Football--E. J. Mills, defensive coordinator at Amherst, appointed interim head coach for the 1997 season, replacing Jack Siedlecki, who was named head coach at Yale. It is the first head-coaching position for Mills, who has been defensive coordinator for the past four years. Siedlecki was named to replace the retiring Carm Cozza at Yale. Siedlecki was head coach at Amherst for four years and was the 1996 American Football Coaches Association District I coach of the year after his team finished 7-1 and won the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship ... Gary Darnell, defensive coordinator at Texas and a former assistant at Notre Dame and Florida, hired as head coach at Western Michigan. Darnell joined the Texas staff in 1992 as assistant head coach/special teams. He replaces Al Molde, head coach at the school for the past 10 years, whose contract was not renewed.
Chris Creighton, offensive coordinator at Manchester since 1993, named head coach at Ottawa ... Paul Miller, a football coach and teacher at the high-school level, named head coach at St. Olaf, succeeding interim head coach Rod Grubb, who stepped into the position when Don Canfield died of cancer in May. Miller has been an assistant coach at St. Thomas (Minnesota) and Minnesota ... Bob DeBesse, offensive coordinator at Minnesota for the past five seasons, selected as head coach at Southwest Texas State. He succeeds Jim Bob Helduser, who was released. DeBesse also has been offensive coordinator at Texas Christian ... Walt Harris, Ohio State quarterbacks coach, hired as head coach at Pittsburgh. Harris was an assistant at Ohio State for two years after stints with the New York Jets and at Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan State, California and Pacific (California).
Boston College selected Tom O'Brien, offensive coordinator at Virginia, to succeed Dan Henning, who resigned. O'Brien has been Virginia's offensive coordinator for the past six seasons ... John McKenzie, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fayetteville State, appointed head coach at Delaware State. McKenzie also has been an assistant at Alabama State ... Roger Welsh, head football coach for the past 11 years at Capital, relinquished his coaching duties to concentrate on his duties as athletics director. Welsh has been Capital's head football coach since 1986 and AD since 1992 ... Mike Cavan, head coach at East Tennessee State for the past five years, appointed head coach at Southern Methodist, succeeding Tom Rossley, who was dismissed after posting a 15-48-3 record in six seasons. Cavan has an overall record of 67-49-2, including six seasons at Valdosta State and five seasons at East Tennessee State.
Football assistants--Eastern Michigan hired Tony Lombardi as linebackers coach. Lombardi was defensive coordinator at Mankato State for the past eight years ... Mankato State receivers coach Chad Gossard resigned to take a sales position with McNeilus Steel in Dodge LEFT, Minnesota. Gossard had been a full-time assistant at Mankato State since 1992 ... Ken Niumatalolo, who coached Navy slot backs during the past two seasons, promoted to offensive coordinator at the academy. He succeeds Paul Johnson, who was named head coach at Georgia Southern. Navy also announced the appointment of Mike Vaught as slot backs coach and Todd Spencer as offensive tackles coach. Vaught coached offensive tackles at Navy for the past two seasons, while Spencer joins Navy from Oregon State, where he had coached the offensive line since 1991 ... Mike Gillhamer, who earlier resigned at Rutgers to accept a coaching position at Illinois, decided to remain at Rutgers as defensive backs coach. Also, Rutgers running backs coach Wally Gaskins resigned, citing personal reasons ... Brian Williams and Vincent White hired at Pittsburgh. Williams, who served last season as linebackers coach at Cincinnati, returns to the school where he served as linebackers coach during the 1992 season. White was receivers coach at Southern Methodist for the past two seasons.
Men's soccer--Sean Murphy, head men's coach at Wentworth Institute for the past seven seasons, resigned to take a teaching position in his native England. In addition to his coaching position, Murphy was a professor in the institute's civil, construction and environmental engineering department. He was named Commonwealth Coast Conference coach of the year in 1995 and 1996 ... Ray Reid, who coached Southern Connecticut State soccer teams to three Division II men's championships, hired at Connecticut. Reid has a 146-17-15 record in eight years at Southern Connecticut State and led the team to Division II titles in 1990, 1992 and 1995 ... James Cook, director of intramurals and recreation at Roger Williams, given additional duties as head men's soccer coach. For the past three seasons, Cook has served as head men's soccer coach at Massachusetts-Dartmouth, where he posted a 22-24-5 record. He replaces Rui DeMedeiros, who resigned for personal reasons.
Women's soccer--Denise Lyons, part-time head women's coach at Keene State for the past four years, will continue in the position on a full-time basis. Lyons, a former all-American player for the Owls, took over the program in 1992 and coached her teams to three postseason appearances ... Steve O'Day named head women's coach at Franklin & Marshall. O'Day replaces Scoop Stanisic, who resigned late in his first season as head coach for personal reasons.
Women's softball--Tina Phillips, a high-school coach since 1990, named head softball coach at Russell Sage. She has coached her teams to a 65-24 record. Phillips also will serve as assistant director of athletics and recreation.
Men's and women's swimming--Eugene Leonard named head coach of the men's and women's teams at Keene State. Leonard has coached at the high-school and club levels.
Men's tennis--Chuck Waldron, head men's tennis coach at Newberry, announced his resignation ... Matt Meredith named interim men's tennis coach at Slippery Rock for the 1997 season, succeeding Jim McFarland, who retired after 22 years. Meredith, who was a two-year team captain during his playing career at Slippery Rock, has been assistant tennis pro at the Bucks County Racquet Club.
Women's tennis--Tennis professional Bonnie Elliott hired as head coach for the second-year women's program at George Fox. Elliott has worked as a professional in Washington and Arizona and is certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association.
Women's volleyball--South Alabama appointed Ginger Mayson as head women's volleyball coach. Mayson was head coach at South Alabama in 1981 and 1982 before moving to Michigan State, where she was head coach from 1985 to 1992. Mayson replaces Jim Smoot, who was named general manager/coach at the Player's Volleyball Club in Orem, Utah ... Colleen Cashman appointed head coach at Binghamton, replacing Sheryl Sousa, who guided the Colonials to one NCAA tournament appearance and three Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament berths in five years. Sousa, who also is the school's associate athletics director, will concentrate on those duties. Cashman has been part of the Binghamton volleyball program for nearly a decade, first as a player and then as assistant coach. She served as associate coach in 1996 ... Kari Eckheart, a 1995 graduate of Iowa State, named head coach at Gustavus Adolphus. She replaces Gretchen Koehler, who retired after serving as head coach for the past 26 years. Eckheart has been assistant volleyball and women's basketball coach at Gustavus Adolphus for the past two years ... Theresa Garlacy named head coach at Bryant after serving as interim head coach since August. Garlacy led Bryant to an 18-13 mark and the Northeast-10 Conference tournament semifinals this season. She had been an assistant for two years.
Wrestling assistant--Andy Shrader joined the Franklin & Marshall wrestling staff after four years on the school's wrestling team.
STAFF
Development director--Bruce Rosengrant, who has been responsible for athletics fund-raising at Lycoming for the past two years, appointed director of development at North Carolina-Greensboro. He was development officer and director of the Warrior Club at Lycoming ... Richard Rumsey, director of athletics development at Merchant Marine for the past four years, hired as director of development at Akron.
Life skills coordinator--Gerald Yearwood appointed to the newly created position of life skills coordinator/assistant director of academic advising at Akron. Yearwood spent the past year as chief of addiction services/alcoholism services at Syracuse (New York) Community Health LEFT.
Sports information director--Cody Wells appointed at Messiah.
Ticket manager--Michael Holdren named to the new position of manager of athletics ticketing at Delaware. Holdren joins the Delaware staff after serving as director of ticket operations for the Class A Salem (Virginia) Avalanche of the Carolina Baseball League since January 1995.
ASSOCIATION
USA Baseball named Bob Whalen, head baseball coach at Dartmouth, as business manager of the 1997 USA Baseball Team. Whalen will be responsible for the team's day-to-day logistical movements and scheduling at all sites on the team's 1997 summer tour.
NCAA NATIONAL OFFICE
Doug Archie and Pat Britz joined the NCAA legislative services staff as legislative assistants. Archie was compliance coordinator at North Dakota and also has served an internship at Toledo. Britz was compliance coordinator at East Tennessee State and was assistant commissioner at the Southern Conference before that. He also has been assistant sports information director at North Carolina-Asheville.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS
Lynn has accepted an invitation to join the eight-member Sunshine State Conference, effective July 1, 1997. Lynn will replace North Florida, which is leaving at the end the 1996-97 to become a member of the Peach Belt Athletic Conference.
AGREEMENT
The Trans America Athletic Conference announced that USAir has became a corporate partner and will be a sponsor on the conference's television network.

Truman State tailback Jarrett Anderson received the 1996 Harlon Hill Trophy as NCAA Division II football player of the year ... Colorado's Matt Russell received the 1996 Butkus Award, presented annually to the best linebacker in college football by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando ... Nicholls State's Darren Barbier named the winner of the 10th annual Eddie Robinson Award, presented to the top Division I-AA coach by The Sports Network ... Larry Cowan, head coach of the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team, awarded the Shield Award by the Plattsburgh City Police for providing exemplary community service. The Cardinal basketball team is active throughout the year in various community service activities, including raising more than $6,000 for the Plattsburgh City Police DARE program.

DEATHS
St. John's (New York) head golf coach John "Doc" Gimmler died December 7 of a heart attack. He was 69. Gimmler's association with the university stretched over 43 years and included service as associate athletics director, head athletic trainer and golf coach. He enrolled in St. John's in 1946 and participated in the first College World Series in 1949. He was named head golf coach in 1972.
Former Baylor athletics director Jack Patterson died December 17 at his home in Waco, Texas. He was 82. Patterson was Baylor's AD from 1971 to 1980 and was track coach from 1956 to 1963. Patterson graduated from Rice and coached the Houston track team before joining the Baylor staff in 1956 as track coach. He moved to Texas in 1963 and guided the Longhorns to three track titles before returning to Baylor as AD in 1971.
Clayton Tonnemaker, an all-America lineman at Minnesota who played for the Green Bay Packers, died December 25 of complications after surgery. He was 68. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Tonnemaker started at LEFT and linebacker for the Gophers from 1946 to 1949. He joined Green Bay as a first-round draft pick in 1950 and played in 1953 and 1954.
