Division I women's volleyball dead period

During its August 1996 meeting, the NCAA Council approved an amendment to Bylaw 30.11.7.6, which relates to the dead period in Division I women's volleyball that surrounds the National Collegiate Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. The previous standard indicated that the dead period lasted from Wednesday prior to the National Collegiate Division I Women's Volleyball Championship game to noon the day after the game. The new standard, effective immediately, extends the end of the dead period in Division I women's volleyball from noon on the day after the Division I Women's Volleyball Championship game to midnight December 31 (an extension of approximately 10 days). This year's Division I Women's Volleyball Championship is conducted December 19 and 21, 1996 in Cleveland, Ohio. Accordingly, the dead period this year runs from 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, December 18, through midnight, December 31.

Definition of a dead period

A dead period is that period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the member institution's campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospects to the institution's campus. The provision of complimentary admissions to a prospect during a dead period is prohibited, except as provided in 13.8.2.5 for a prospect who visits an institution as part of a group. During such a dead period, a coaching staff member may not serve as a speaker at or attend a meeting or banquet at which prospects are in attendance, except as provided in 13.1.4.1.1, and may not visit the prospects' educational institutions. It remains permissible, however, for an institutional staff member to write or telephone prospects during such a dead period (NCAA Bylaw 13.02.4.4).

Official visit interpretations

During two of its recent conference calls, the NCAA Interpretations Committee issued the following interpretations:

1. Test Score Being Presented Prior to Official Visit.

It is permissible for an institution to use the applicable testing agency's voice-automated system (as opposed to a written document) to access a prospect's test score in order for the prospect to receive an official visit (November 12, 1996, Item No. 1).

2. Prospect Making Visit to Member Institution in Conjunction with a Paid Visit to a Two-year College.

An institution may not make arrangements with a two-year college for a prospect to visit its campus in conjunction with the prospect receiving a visit to the two-year college (October 15, 1996, Item No. 1).
