Same teams, same score, new champion

Bloomsburg avenges '95 defeat to Lock Haven in II field hockey

The opponents were the same and the score was the same as a year ago, but a new champion was crowned as Bloomsburg escaped with a 1-0 victory over host Lock Haven November 10 in the Division II Field Hockey Championship.

Bloomsburg's Amber Hess scored the lone goal of the contest on a penalty stroke with just two seconds remaining in the first half. Hess had taken a penalty corner moments earlier, but a Lock Haven defender was called for putting her stick above her head to deflect the shot from the goal. Hess' penalty stroke eluded Lock Haven goalkeeper Kristen Geissler and rattled the left corner of the cage.

Lock Haven, winner of the last two championships, saw several opportunities thwarted in the second half by Bloomsburg goalkeeper Bev Hartley, who racked up 17 saves in the victory.

Bloomsburg (19-2) captured its third title, having also won championships in 1983 and 1993. Lock Haven finished the campaign 20-3.

The two teams have met for the title seven times in the championship's eight-year history.

Lock Haven outshot the Huskies, 23-8, and had four more penalty corners but was unable to pull out the victory.

Bloomsburg's Hartley, Michelle Martin and Nicole Mowrer were selected to the all-tournament team along with Lock Haven's Melanie Helm and Sharon Kreider.
