III urges developing nomination database for new structure
The Division III Steering Committee has recommended creation of a nominations database to assist with the nominating process in the new governance structure.
The database would provide a pool from which to draw candidates for governing bodies. The steering committee met October 7-9 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Cost implications of a database will be explored before action is taken. The steering committee felt that a database would make filling vacancies on committees a smoother process.
The steering committee also asked that information about the Division III nomination process and openings available for Division III representatives on committees and the new governing bodies be communicated to the membership to assist in finding suitable candidates.
Broad-based inclusion
The steering committee stressed that a goal of the committee selection process is to include representatives of as many institutions as possible in the new governance structure.
In other actions, the steering committee:
* Recommended an official interpretation that would permit a Division III student-athlete to participate in off-campus presentations by the institution as part of the school's recruitment process for all prospective students, including nonathletes.
* Discussed interpretations relating to awards of circumstance and nonathletics achievement awards.
* Determined that any tuition waiver that includes employment as a component of the award should remain classified as a tuition waiver and would not be considered on-campus employment.
* Agreed to forward to the Division III Financial Aid Committee in the new governance structure a number of issues related to Division III financial aid legislation.
