Alfred's Ford hired as AD at Howard

Henry "Hank" Ford, athletics director at Alfred since 1991, has been hired as AD at Howard, effective October 21.

record Ford joined the Alfred staff in 1991 after 16 years at Hampton, where he was assistant director of athletics and an instructor. He also was men's basketball coach and intramurals director at Hampton for 12 years.

During his tenure at Alfred, Ford oversaw the addition of women's softball and lacrosse and the revitalization of the men's and women's cross country program. Most recently, he helped bring the women's track and field program back after a seven-year absence.

Ford holds a bachelor's degree from Maryland-Eastern Shore and a master's degree in administration of physical education from Indiana. After completing the degree at Indiana, Ford returned to Maryland-Eastern Shore, where he was assistant basketball coach, head swimming coach and an instructor. He also served two years as men's basketball coach, director of aquatics and assistant professor at Tuskegee.

Jerry Hudson, president of Willamette since 1980, announced his resignation, effective at the end of the 1996-97 academic year. Hudson will become executive vice-president of The Collins Foundation, a Portland, Oregon, philanthropic organization ... Anthony Evans, president of Cal State San Bernardino, announced his retirement, effective in late summer 1997 ... Donald Haragan, interim president of Texas Tech, named president ... Kaye Howe, president of Western State, selected as president of International University College.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Concordia (New York) appointed Ivan Marquez athletics director. Marquez, a former senior operations executive for Macy's and Bloomingdale's and a former collegiate coach, also will head the men's and women's volleyball programs ... Fran Hummel hired at Winona State after serving as AD at Minot State for five years. He also has been assistant AD at Northern State and head wrestling and tennis coach and assistant football coach ... Steve Erber, AD and former wrestling coach at Binghamton, selected at Muhlenberg, succeeding Connie Kunda, who had served as interim AD since June 1, 1995. Kunda was named associate AD. Erber spent the past 14 years in athletics administration at Binghamton, serving as AD since March 1995 ... Idaho appointed former Pittsburgh and Colorado State athletics director Oval Jaynes.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Connie Kunda, interim athletics director at Muhlenberg since June 1995, named associate AD at the school. She will continue as senior woman administrator and head of the department of physical education, recreation and athletics.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Jim Elsasser named assistant athletics director for internal affairs at Bowling Green. Elsasser, who has been assistant to the athletics director for facilities and director of Bowling Green summer sports camps for the past two years, has served in the internal affairs position on an interim basis since June ... Cathy Shaw promoted to senior advancement officer/assistant AD for advancement at Marquette. Shaw served as external affairs coordinator for Marquette's Blue & Gold Fund during the past year ... Sean Johnson, sports information director at Fairfield, appointed assistant AD for media relations at North Texas.

COACHES

BASEBALL--Manny Mantrana named head coach at St. Thomas (Florida).

BASEBALL ASSISTANTS--Antoine Williams, a 1996 Catholic graduate, hired at his alma mater.

MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--California (Pennsylvania) selected Andrew Moore as a full-time assistant. Moore, who was a member of the Muskingum basketball team for four years and the tennis team for one year, has been an assistant at Kenyon for the past two years ... Gary Grzesk named at Youngstown State. He was a four-year member of the Wisconsin-Green Bay basketball team ... Ed Manzanares, a 1995 New Mexico graduate, hired at New Mexico Highlands ... Chris Fear appointed at Calvin. He was a varsity player at South Dakota from 1991 to 1995 ... St. Joseph's (New York) selected John Noak, a basketball assistant, scout, recruiting coordinator and scheduler at Molloy.

Lisa Beamer, assistant women's basketball coach at Tampa, given additional duties as administrative assistant for men's basketball. Beamer replaces Nick Chaykowski, who resigned to become a high-school boys' coach. As she enters her fifth season as assistant women's coach, Beamer will add scheduling, budget accounting and compliance for the men's team to her duties ... Marquette hired Sean Rivers as men's basketball administrative assistant. He has been an assistant coach at Oneonta State, Merchant Marine and Montgomery ... Tony Dickens, a former Albany (New York) player and recently a head high-school coach in Ohio, selected as assistant coach at his alma mater. Albany also promoted Andrew Goodemote from interim to full-time status as an assistant coach. Goodemote has been with the Albany basketball program for the past three years and an assistant coach since last season ... Newberry announced the resignation of Michael Lukacs as assistant coach after two seasons in the position ... Steve Pikiell and Adrian Walters named assistant coaches at Central Connecticut State and Steve Hayn appointed administrative assistant there for men's basketball.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL--Norm Benn, head coach at Florida Southern for the past 11 years, announced he will resign after the 1996-97 season. Assistant coach Diane Foli was named to succeed him for the 1997-98 season. Benn, who will retain his duties as compliance coordinator at Florida Southern, is the most victorious coach in the school's history ... Kathy Kilty, a 1992 Catholic graduate, hired as head coach at her alma mater.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Kristie Maravalli named assistant coach at Manchester. She was assistant coach at Swarthmore last season ... Tara Johnson and Kendra Koneski selected as assistant coaches at Adelphi. Koneski became Adelphi's all-time leading scorer and rebounder during her four years on the women's team. Johnson was team captain her senior year at St. Peter's ... New Orleans appointed Shanna Cook, who played for the school's team from 1991 to 1995. Cook is the school's first full-time No. 2 assistant ... Bob Clark, assistant coach last season at Long Beach State, hired as assistant coach at Towson State. He also has coached at Radford and Providence ... Jessica Cherry hired as assistant coach at York (New York).

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY--Jon Swanson appointed head coach at Westminster (Missouri), replacing Dick Ault, who retired. It is the first coaching assignment for Swanson, the school's chaplain.

FIELD HOCKEY--Regis (Colorado) named Sherrill Sebesta, a 1996 graduate of Wellesley. Sebesta was team captain for two years at Wellesley and was an academic all-American.

FIELD HOCKEY ASSISTANT--Veronica Froio, a 1996 graduate of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, hired as assistant coach at Regis (Colorado). She was a four-year member of the field hockey team.

FOOTBALL--Cal State Chico head coach Gary Houser announced his resignation to pursue opportunities outside coaching. Ron Tomlinson, in his fifth year as the team's offensive coordinator, was named interim coach for the remainder of the season. Houser, who will serve as a consultant, has been on the Cal State Chico staff for 18 years and head coach since 1989. Tomlinson was a quarterback for the Wildcats from 1988 to 1991.

FOOTBALL ASSISTANTS--John Butler, a 1995 graduate of Catholic, promoted to defensive coordinator ... Ted Michael appointed defensive coordinator at Westminster (Missouri). He coached in the Missouri high-school ranks for the past 25 years.

WOMEN'S GOLF--Carroll Clark named head women's coach at New Orleans. Clark has been director of golf instruction at Eastover Country Club in New Orleans since December 1994 and will retain those duties. He succeeds Missy Lynn, who resigned to enter private business.

MEN'S ICE HOCKEY ASSISTANT--Hamilton named Tim Vanini assistant coach. Vanini was interim head coach for the hockey team at Nichols School in Buffalo, New York. He was a four-year letterman for the Cornell team.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S ROWING--UC San Diego appointed Michael Filippone head coach of the men's team. Filippone has coached rowing at UC San Diego since 1993 and served as head coach of junior crew from 1993 to 1995. Since January, he has been coaching sculling for the San Diego Rowing Club ... Stephen Peterson, a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic rowing team, hired as head coach of men's and women's crew at George Washington. Peterson will direct the George Washington crew program while working primarily with the women's varsity team.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER--John Meindl, who played goalkeeper for Catholic from 1986 to 1989, appointed head men's coach at his alma mater. Gianni Grimaldi, a former professional coach in Italy who also has coached at American, Georgetown, Howard and Princeton, was named head women's coach at the school.

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL--Deanna Parks, women's volleyball and softball coach at Salisbury State for the past three years, hired as head softball coach at Akron ... Charlie Dunn, assistant coach at Catholic for the past three years, promoted to head coach ... Franklin & Marshall appointed Stacey Hollinger head coach. During her collegiate career at Millersville, Hollinger served as team captain and was a two-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and regional all-star selection in softball and field hockey.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING--Rick Simpson named interim swimming and diving coach at Rutgers.

WOMEN'S TENNIS--Natalie Butler named tennis coach at Bryn Mawr, where she also will coach badminton. She most recently was minority participation and player development coordinator for USTA/Middle States Section, Inc. ... Former Catholic tennis player Caroline Percopo selected as head women's coach there.

WOMEN'S TRACK ASSISTANT--James Robinson named assistant coach at Rutgers.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL ASSISTANT--Emerson-Massachusetts College of Art appointed Nicole Trudeau as assistant coach. Trudeau played from 1992 to 1996 at Providence.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO--Lou Tully, a 12-year high-school and junior college water polo coach, named as the first women's water polo coach at San Jose State.

STAFF

ACADEMIC ADVISOR--Ira Sweet appointed academic advisor and special advisor to the athletics director at Staten Island.

ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATIVE ASSOCIATE--Brent Bass, former assistant men's basketball coach at Iona, named athletics administrative associate at Eastern Michigan.

LIFE SKILLS COORDINATOR--Frances Shavers, director of alumni clubs and student programs for the Notre Dame Alumni Association, appointed coordinator for the new life skills program at Notre Dame. Shavers, a 1990 Notre Dame graduate, has worked at the alumni association since 1992.

MARKETING CONSULTANT--Temple graduate Joe Kissel appointed consultant to the Temple athletics department for sports marketing. He replaces Mike Felici, who accepted a position with Infinity Broadcasting Company.

MEDIA RELATIONS DIRECTOR--Fordham announced the resignation of Bill Holtz as director of sports media relations. Holtz, who had been director since 1993, will work with Alan Taylor Communications in New York City.

SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTORS--Art Chase, sports information director at Presbyterian, hired as SID at Citadel. Chase was an assistant in sports information at Citadel from 1991 to 1993 ... Clint Often selected at Mary Washington, succeeding Vince Benigni, the first full-time SID at Mary Washington. Benigni resigned after eight years to pursue a doctorate at Georgia. Often was an assistant SID at Frostburg State ... Mark Meachem given additional duties at Manhattanville as sports information director. Meachem is entering his third year as an assistant men's basketball coach and has been a research editor at Reader's Digest for the past six years ... Becky Paull named interim SID at Idaho, succeeding Sean Johnson, who became assistant athletics director for media relations at North Texas ... Fairfield announced the resignation of Vic Dascenzo and the appointment of Drew Brown as acting SID.

SPORTS INFORMATION ASSISTANTS--Todd Lamb selected as assistant sports information director at Rice. Lamb, who was an intern in the Rice athletics news bureau in 1994-95, returns to the school after serving as assistant SID at Texas-San Antonio for the past nine months. He replaces Mark Sanders, who resigned to enter private business ... Jeff Patrick appointed assistant SID at Florida Atlantic. Patrick was a student administrative assistant for four years with the Tennessee women's sports information office.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH--Illinois-Chicago hired Richard Markoff as strength and conditioning coach. Currently president of Fitness Resources and Athletic Training in Skokie, Illinois, Markoff becomes the Flames' first strength and conditioning coach. He has 16 years' experience, including work with the Chicago Bulls, Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, DePaul, Loyola (Illinois) and the Miami Dolphins.

CONFERENCES

Conference USA named Kendyl Baugh as assistant director of championships/
marketing. Baugh has been assistant director of championships/compliance for the past year.

The Big South Conference appointed Leo Kirk associate commissioner.

Hockey East announced the resignation of commissioner Robert DeGregorio Jr.

ASSOCIATIONS

Regina Sullivan, former assistant director of athletics at San Diego, named interim director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and Volleyball Informational Products (VIP) Projects and Programs. Sullivan will handle the day-to-day administrative duties of VIP and assist the AVCA with sponsorship, licensing, publications production and special projects. Sullivan was assistant AD at San Diego from 1990 until August of this year. She also has been an assistant to the AD at Tennessee and assistant executive director of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.


NOTABLES

USA Baseball selected Bob Milano, head baseball coach at California, to serve as head coach of the 1997 USA Baseball Team. He succeeds Skip Bertman, who led the USA Baseball Team to a combined record of 71-11 over the past two seasons.

The Eastern College Athletic Conference named Betty Kruczek, former AD at Fitchburg State, as recipient of the Katherine Ley Award. The award honors someone of demonstrated leadership ability, a strong proponent of women's issues and a model for women coaches and administrators. Kruczek, who joined the Fitchburg State staff in 1966 and became the school's first full-time AD in 1978, retired after 18 years in that post. She was the first woman to serve on the NCAA Division III Steering Committee.

The ECAC also presented Awards of Valor to four student-athletes for courage, motivation and relentless determination. Recipients are: J. P. McKersie of Boston U., an all-American goaltender on the ice hockey team who was injured when his bike collided with a car; Suzanne Smith, Misericodia, who led the field hockey team to a conference championship 10 months after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease; Jodi Norton, Columbia-Barnard, a member of the diving team while fighting lupus, a chronic systemic autoimmune disease; and Monique "Mo" Harris, Endicott, a two-year starter for the basketball team who survived a kidney transplant.

The winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of September 28 (week No. 5) are: longest run from scrimmage, 80 yards, Andre Johnson, Air Force vs. Rice; longest pass play, 99 yards, Troy DeGar to Wes Caswell, Tulsa vs. Oklahoma; longest punt average (minimum two punts), 51.6 yards on three punts, Sean Reali, Syracuse vs. Virginia Tech; longest punt return, 79 yards, Jacquez Green, Florida vs. Kentucky; longest kickoff return, 85 yards, Dimitrious Stanley, Ohio State vs. Notre Dame; and longest field goal, 50 yards (tie), Andy Crosland, Miami (Florida) vs. Pittsburgh, and Bill Hollows, Wake Forest vs. Clemson. AT&T provides $400 weekly in each of the six categories to the NCAA Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.

Staci Hintze, a 6-3 middle blocker at Oregon State, named Division I player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Tanya Cate of Nebraska-Omaha was named in Division II and Kim Woodring of Wittenberg took the honors in Division III.

Texas linebacker Tyson King named the fourth member of the College Football Association Good Works Team for the 1996 season. King, a regular visitor at The Children's Hospital of Austin, spearheads a group of Longhorn players that visit patients every Friday before a home game.

The Rotary Club of Houston announced 12 semifinalists for the 1996 Rotary Lombardi Award, presented annually to the college football lineman of the year. The 27th Lombardi Award will be presented December 5 in Houston. Semifinalists are Cornell Brown, senior defensive end, Virginia Tech; K. C. Jones, senior LEFT, Miami (Florida); Brandon Mitchell, senior defensive end, Texas A&M; Chris Naole, senior guard, Colorado; Dan Neil, senior guard, Texas; Orlando Pace (1995 Lombardi Award winner), junior tackle, Ohio State; Rod Payne, senior LEFT, Michigan; Juan Rogue, senior tackle, Arizona State; Darrell Russell, junior defensive tackle, Southern California; Matt Russell, senior linebacker, Colorado; Aaron Taylor, junior LEFT, Nebraska; and Jared Tomich, senior defensive end, Nebraska.


DEATHS

Paul Terhes, who led Bucknell to the Lambert Cup football championship as a senior in 1960, died September 18 in Annapolis, Maryland. He was 57. Terhes was first-team quarterback in 1960 on The Associated Press Little All-American and AP and United Press International All-East teams. A member of the Bucknell Hall of Fame, he was most valuable player in the Middle Atlantic Conference in 1959 and 1960 and MVP of the All-American Bowl in 1960, and was drafted by the Baltimore Colts and the Boston Patriots.
