Officiating clinics can be viewed via videoconference
For the 12th year, regional officiating clinics administered by the NCAA Basketball Officiating
Committee will be conducted in October, and for the third year, Division I head coaches will be
allowed to view the clinic via a live video conference.
Head coaches may view the video conference October 16 in lieu of attending one of the regional
clinics. If a school's head coach does not view the live video conference, a member of the school's
full-time basketball coaching staff must attend one of the regional clinics.
The women's video conference will be conducted from 9 to 11 a.m. (Central time). The men's
conference will follow from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The clinics can be downlinked from a satellite dish
using the following coordinates: Galaxy 9, C-Band, Transponder 22 Horizontal, Downlink Frequency
4140 (located between G5 and Telstar 303 at 123 degrees west. Galaxy 9 is where Telstar 303 formerly
was and where SBS 5, a ku-band satellite, is now.)
The video conference also is available (but not mandatory) for Divisions II and III head coaches,
members of the media and sports information directors. Viewers may ask questions of the clinicians
by dialing 913/661-9178. To receive assistance if experiencing a problem with transmission of the
conference, the following telephone number should be used: 816/453-0020 or 4650.
The women's clinics and video conference will be conducted by Marcy Weston, secretary-rules editor
of the NCAA Women's Basketball Rules Committee and national coordinator of women's basketball
officiating. Weston will be assisted at the in-person clinics by Bill Stokes, supervisor of
officials for the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big South Conference and Conference USA.
The men's clinics and video conference will be conducted by Henry O. Nichols, national coordinator
of men's basketball officiating, and Edward R. Bilik, secretary-rules editor of the NCAA Men's
Basketball Rules Committee.
All Division I supervisors of officials and officials are required to attend one of the 1996
clinics.
Basketball officiating video cassettes are available from the NCAA in preparation for the 1996-97
season.
Instructional videotapes for both the men's and the women's game can be ordered. The instructional tapes are available in VHS format for $15.
The 1996-97 women's instructional video demonstrates traveling, post play, bench decorum and
handchecking. The 1996-97 men's instructional video highlights various points of emphasis.
Videotapes of one of the men's and one of the women's regional officiating clinics can be purchased
for $20 after November 16.
Copies of instructional video cassettes from previous years and from past clinics also can be
purchased.
