Yale's Cozza to retire after 32 years

Carm Cozza, who has coached Yale's football teams to 10 Ivy Group championships during more than 30 years at the school, is retiring at the conclusion of the 1996 season.

record Cozza began his collegiate coaching career at Miami (Ohio), his alma mater, in 1956. He joined the Yale staff as an assistant coach with responsibility for the backfield in 1963. He was promoted to head coach in 1965.

Cozza, who is 66, has compiled a 177-111-5 record at Yale, making him the school's most-victorious coach.

Cozza said he thought it is fitting to retire as Yale's 32nd coach after his 32nd year and added that he chose to make the announcement before the season started to alleviate any added pressure on the players.

Wilmington (Ohio) appointed Greg Hughes, an assistant for the past two seasons at Eastern Kentucky ... Robert Miscik hired at Indiana (Pennsylvania). Miscik played professional baseball from 1980 to 1988 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the California Angels and also played in Venezuela and Mexico in the winters of 1983 and 1984. WOMEN'S GOLF ASSISTANT--Northern Illinois hired Holly Alcala as its first full-time assistant coach. Alcala played golf at Oklahoma and has coached at the high-school level. She also worked as an instructor at the Rob Roy Golf Course.

MEN'S ICE HOCKEY ASSISTANT--Roger Williams appointed Kevin Matson as assistant coach. Matson was a three-year letter winner in hockey at Middlebury and has coached at the high-school level since 1984.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S LACROSSE--Rob Quinn appointed men's coach at New England College, where he also will be director of skiing ... Suzanne Weinberg hired as head women's coach at Drew, replacing Karin Brower, who became head coach at Princeton. Weinberg was a four-year member of the Penn State lacrosse team before her graduation in January. She served as an assistant lacrosse coach at Penn State following graduation.

Crangi, a 1996 Goucher graduate, was named 1996 Division III player of the year last season after leading the nation with 7.70 points per game ... The National Soccer Coaches Association of America selected Howard Milton as administrative assistant intern. Milton, who is working on a master's degree in educational administration at Kansas, joins the NSCAA from a compliance internship at the Western Athletic Conference.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

East Carolina accepted an invitation to join Conference USA for football competition. East Carolina, which has been a Division I football independent since 1977, will be eligible to compete for the Conference USA championship beginning with the 1997 season. East Carolina is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association in other sports.

CLARIFICATION

An item in the NCAA Record section of the September 2 issue of The NCAA News did not specify that Lisa Pleban, a Sacred Heart women's basketball assistant who recently was named head women's basketball coach at Adelphi, served as men's and women's cross country coach at Sacred Heart in 1993 and 1994. Christian Morrison, men's and women's track and field coach at Sacred Heart since August 1994, replaced Pleban as head cross country coach in March 1995.


NOTABLES

Adm. Charles Larsen, in his second tour of duty as superintendent at Navy, was named the recipient of the All-American Football Foundation's Outstanding College President Award. The foundation also awarded the Admiral Thomas Hamilton Award to Gen. Pete Dawkins, Army's 1958 Heisman Trophy winner.

Katie Crawford, a 6-3 middle blocker for No. 17-ranked UC Santa Barbara, named the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Division I player of the week after leading the Gauchos to five wins, including a pair of victories against ranked teams. For the week, Crawford hit .374, with 87 kills, 30 blocks, 24 digs and nine service aces. Jodi Jost of Minnesota-Duluth was named Division II player of the week after collecting 46 kills, 36 digs, five blocks and a .318 hitting percentage. In Division III, sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Martz took the honors after leading Washington (Missouri) to four victories over Division II teams and the championship of the Washburn Invite. Martz had 60 kills, 21 blocks, 16 digs and a .485 hitting percentage for the week.

The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators named its district administrators of the year. They are, by district: District 1, Linda Moulton, Clark (Massachusetts); District 2, Marilyn McNeil, Monmouth (New Jersey); District 3, Mary Jo Warner, George Washington; District 4, Fern Gardner, Utah; District 5, Patty Viverito, Gateway Football Conference/Missouri Valley Conference; District 6, Margie McDonald, Western Athletic Conference; and District 7, Jeannine McHaney, Texas Tech (posthumous award).

Winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of September 7 (week No. 2) are: longest run from scrimmage, 80 yards, Kevin Faulk, LSU vs. Houston; longest pass play, 97 yards, Matt Koffler to Jay Soward, Southern California vs. Illinois; longest punt return (minimum two punts), 54.5 yards on two punts, Will Brice, Virginia vs. Central Michigan; longest punt return, 86 yards, Terry Fair, Tennessee vs. UCLA; longest kickoff return, 96 yards, Calvin Branch, Colorado State vs. Colorado; and longest field goal, 52 yards, Phil Dawson, Texas vs. New Mexico State. Southern Methodist placekicker Daniel Hernandez named to the College Football Assocation's 1996 "Good Works Team." Hernandez is a regular volunteer at a preschool that teaches English to Hispanic children before they enter the first grade, and he organized a soccer clinic at Southern Methodist for more than 200 children. The Good Works Team was established in 1992 and recognizes outstanding efforts of college football players off the field. The team annually includes 11 players; one member is selected each week during the season.


DEATHS

Arda Bowser, the last surviving member of the National Football League's first championship team and the league's oldest ex-player, died September 7. He was 97. Bowser played with the Canton Bulldogs' 1922 championship team. A punter, placekicker, linebacker and fullback who was paid $250 a game, Bowser was the first NFL player to use kicking tees. Before his pro career, Bowser was a college star at Bucknell and is a member of the Bucknell Football Hall of Fame.

Willis Smith, who played two years for the New York Giants and helped win a championship in 1934, died September 4. He was 86. Smith, dubbed the "Little Giant" and "Little Mr. Zero," stood 5-6, weighed 147 pounds and had the number "0" on his jersey. Smith played college football at Idaho and is in the Idaho Hall of Fame.
