Halligan appointed to Commission
James E. Halligan, president of Oklahoma State University, has been appointed to the NCAA Presidents Commission as a representative of the Big 12 Conference.
Halligan, who also will serve on the Division I Board of Directors Transition Team, replaces Charles A. Kiesler, who no longer serves as chancellor of the University of Missouri, Columbia.
Halligan joins the Commission for the second time. He previously represented the Big West Conference from 1993 to 1994 while he was president of New Mexico State University.
He became president at Oklahoma State in 1994 after 10 years at New Mexico State.
Halligan began his administrative career in higher education in 1975 as chair of the chemical engineering department at Texas Tech University.
He served as dean of the school of engineering at the University of Missouri, Rolla, from 1977 to 1979; dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, from 1979 to 1982; and vice-chancellor for academic affairs at Arkansas from 1982 to 1984.
Halligan earned bachelor's and master's degrees and a doctorate in chemical engineering at Iowa State University.
He has received numerous awards for outstanding teaching and research.
