McAvoy retires after 32 years at Hillsdale
After more than three decades of service to Hillsdale, athletics director Jack McAvoy has announced his retirement.
Michael Kovlachik, athletics director at Grand Valley State, has been named to replace McAvoy.
During his 32 years at Hillsdale, McAvoy served as head men's basketball coach, head football coach, development officer and athletics director.
McAvoy also was instrumental in the formation and development of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference.
After earning a bachelor's degree from Hillsdale in 1955, McAvoy served in the U.S. Army, coached and earned his master's degree before returning to his alma mater to become one of its most notable leaders. All five of his children are Hillsdale graduates.
McAvoy has been recognized for his contributions to collegiate sports, including induction into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990.

Scott Nichols, assistant director of athletics at Springfield for five years, hired at North Adams State ... S. Page Cotton Jr. appointed at DePauw, replacing Ted Katula, who was named director of athletics advancement. Katula had been AD since 1987. He will continue as coach of the men's and women's golf teams. Cotton, who has been at DePauw since 1970, will retain his duties as men's soccer coach ... Chris Bledsoe named AD at New York University, effective September 1. Bledsoe has been a member of the Pace athletics department staff since 1981, serving as sports information director, assistant AD and, since 1988, director of athletics and recreation ... Greg Burke, who was Northwestern State's first athletics fund-raiser from 1986 to 1992, returned to the school as AD. Burke has been director of athletics development and marketing at Akron since 1992.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Mary Bretscher, coordinator of women's athletics at DePauw, promoted to associate AD. She will continue as head women's swimming coach ... Mike Moss hired at Wisconsin. Moss spent the past three years as sports operations manager for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, overseeing the business procedures of archery, boxing, cycling (road and track), equestrian, modern pentathlon and tennis ... Patricia Epps, assistant director of athletics and recreation at Franklin & Marshall, promoted to associate AD. Epps will continue to serve as head coach for women's tennis and women's squash ... Calvin Kuphall named at Ball State. Kuphall was assistant AD for marketing and promotions at Arkansas State for the past six years ... American appointed Jeff Minahan as associate AD for facilities, operations and administration. Minahan has been sports information director at Cal State Sacramento.

Bowling Green announced the resignation of Brad Browning. He had been involved in marketing and promotions at the school since 1987. Browning will be sales manager of the Midwest region of Network International ... Kevin Rochlitz appointed assistant AD of sports marketing and sales
at Miami (Florida). Rochlitz was assistant AD for marketing at Utah State ... Alvernia hired Adam Hertz, who previously was head men's soccer and golf coach at Beaver. He also will coach men's soccer at Alvernia and will coach the women's soccer team when it begins play in 1997 ... Jim Mauro, who joined the Niagara staff as sports information officer in 1986, given additional duties as assistant AD. He will continue as head baseball coach ... Mike O'Brien promoted to assistant AD for development at Lamar. O'Brien, a 1992 Lamar graduate, has been on the athletics staff since 1988, first as a student assistant and later at associate SID ... American International announced that three staff members have been given additional duties as assistant ADs: Art Wilkins, head football coach for the past two seasons, named assistant AD for administration; Kris Cimini, head athletic trainer for six years, named assistant AD for travel operation; and April Huckaby, the college's first field hockey/women's lacrosse coach, named assistant AD for compliance ... Greg Wyatt, one of the most decorated athletes in Northern Arizona football history and a member of the school's athletics hall of fame, hired as assistant AD for development at his alma mater. As quarterback, Wyatt was the most prolific passer in the university's history. After stints with the San Francisco 49ers and in the World Football League, Wyatt has been employed in banking in Seattle and Phoenix ... Tim McMurray named assistant AD for development at Lamar ... Kenny Gamble appointed at Colgate.
SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS
Janine Smith, third-year head volleyball coach, appointed at Texas-Arlington ... Lisa Schriver appointed at Northern State, where she also has been promoted to head women's volleyball coach. Schriver was assistant volleyball and basketball coach at Northern State last season.

BASEBALL--Cal State Fullerton head coach Augie Garrido hired at Texas. Garrido led the Titans to three Division I titles ... Gannon announced the resignation of Michael Bari, head coach for the past four years. He will enter private business ... Joe Zavattaro hired at American International. Zavattaro was head coach at North Adams State for 32 years and garnered 12 conference championships. He also was athletics director at North Adams State ... Marek Drabinski, assistant coach at Connecticut for the past three years, named head coach at Brown ... Shenandoah appointed Paul O'Neil as head coach. O'Neil also will be indoor facilities coordinator and game-day manager for men's and women's basketball. He spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth and previously was an assistant at North Carolina-Asheville ... Jay Murphy hired at Cleveland State.
Greg Christodulu, head coach for the past six seasons at Susquehanna, resigned to become a teacher and coach at his prep alma mater, Gloversville High School. Christodulu, who also was Susquehanna's only assistant football coach, compiled a 104-85-3 baseball record at the school ... Tracy Smith, an assistant coach at Indiana for the past two seasons and a former player and assistant coach at Miami (Ohio), hired at his alma mater as head coach ... Mike Batesole promoted to head coach at Cal State Northridge. Batesole had been interim head coach since last August. He was the top assistant at the school during the 1994 and 1995 seasons.
BASEBALL ASSISTANTS--Matt Criss and Mike Shildt hired at North Carolina-Charlotte. Criss, who has been a pitching coach in several summer collegiate leagues, will be the pitching coach and Shildt will be an assistant coach overseeing position-player instruction and recruiting. He has been a high-school coach ... John Verhoeven and Ron Hauczinger joined the staff at Loyola Marymount. Verhoeven, a former major league pitcher, will be the top assistant pitching coach. Hauczinger was assistant coach at Cypress (Junior) College in California for the past three seasons ... Northern State appointed Keven Lightner. The former Nebraska and Tampa Bay Buccaneers football player also will be offensive line coach and manage the equipment room ... Brian Brown named at Shepherd after serving as a volunteer assistant for the past two seasons. He will continue to work with infielders ... Tim Briggs hired at Susquehanna after three seasons as defensive coordinator and a total of seven seasons on the football staff at American International ... Tim Montez appointed at Cal State Northridge. He was the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at UC Santa Barbara for the past three years ... Arizona State announced the resignation of pitching coach Bob Welch. Dave Sinnes was named to replace Welch.
MEN'S BASKETBALL--Jeff Rutter, assistant at Stetson, named head coach at Wisconsin-Parkside. Rutter was top assistant at Stetson last season and an assistant at North Dakota State from 1990 to 1995 ... David Yanai named at Cal State Los Angeles. Yanai spent the last 19 seasons at Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he compiled a 287-223 overall record ... Dennis Hunt hired at Eastern, replacing Nate Ware as the position is upgraded from part-time to full-time status. Hunt also will be strength/conditioning coordinator. Hunt was assistant coach at Rollins ... Dan Costigan, assistant coach at Southern Maine four of the last five years, appointed interim head coach for the 1996-97 season. Costigan was an assistant at Southern Maine from 1991 to 1993 and then coached for a year at the high-school level. He returned to Southern Maine in 1994 as assistant coach and was named men's cross country and track coach in 1995 ... Maine selected John Giannini, who led Rowan to the Division III championship last season. Giannini compiled a 168-38 record during eight years at Rowan ... Rob Spivery named at Alabama State ... Indiana State announced the resignation of assistant coach Bob Doty ... Drexel extended the contract of head coach Bill Herrion through 2001.
MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Shane Brey hired at Delaware to assist his older brother, head coach Mike Brey. Shane Brey replaced Jeff La Mere, who returned to Duke after a year at Delaware. Brey will be the restricted-earnings coach ... Kirk Earlywine appointed at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was head coach at Pfeiffer last season and has been an assistant at Ball State and Utah ... Loyola (Maryland) selected Herman Harried, a key member of Syracuse teams from 1984 through 1988. After graduation from Syracuse, Harried played professionally overseas for five years. In 1992, he founded a basketball camp in Baltimore and continues as the camp's director of operations ... Marcus Perez hired at Army ... California (Pennsylvania) selected Matthew Davis as full-time assistant coach. Davis has been director of multicultural affairs at DePauw since 1993 ... Alfred Johnson named assistant coach at Tennessee State ... Scott Matthews hired at Missouri-St. Louis.
Brian Blaney, an assistant at Miami (Ohio) last season, appointed at George Washington ... Rick Greene resigned as full-time assistant at Charleston (West Virginia) but will continue as a volunteer assistant. Greene will be replaced by Jeff Boals, who has been the restricted-earnings coach ... Central Michigan hired Tim Waller as an assistant coach and Mark Slessinger as a graduate assistant. Waller, who has 17 years of coaching experience, spent last year as an assistant at Alabama State. Slessinger, a 1996 graduate of Aurora, was a full-time assistant his senior year ... Pat Miller named at Eckerd. Miller previously was at St. Thomas (Florida) ... Kevin Fricke appointed at Arkansas-Little Rock.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL--Meg Sanders hired at Northern Arizona ... Kathy Connell named interim head coach at Pomona-Pitzer. Connell had been head coach at Occidental since 1992 and previously coached at Colgate and Smith ... Laura Williges, head coach at Slippery Rock for the past three years, hired as an assistant at Valdosta State. Williges compiled a 52-29 record at Slippery Rock ... North Carolina Central announced the resignation of Marcia Heady to become women's coach at Mount Olive ... Jerry Finkbeiner named at Oral Roberts.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Marquette announced two new assistants: Jon Cain will serve as assistant coach and Michelle Nason will be restricted-earnings coach for a second season. Cain was an administrative assistant at Marquette in 1994-95 and before that was an assistant at Wisconsin ... Geoff Lanier named at Chicago. He was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Washington (Maryland) from 1994 to 1996 ... Former Lady Pirate basketball standout Danielle Charlesworth hired at East Carolina. She was a three-year starter from 1993 to 1996 for East Carolina ... Delaware appointed Kristen Sullivan, a standout guard at St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania) before her graduation this year ... Anita Keck hired as an assistant basketball coach and soccer coach at Missouri-Rolla, where she was a starting point guard. Keck has been a teacher and coach at the high-school level. She replaces Terri Schrishuhn, who became an assistant at Missouri Western ... Arkansas announced the resignation of assistant coach Kit Kyle.
Sara Liebscher and Benita Martin named at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Liebscher, who will be first assistant, was a graduate assistant for two seasons at Notre Dame. Martin joins the Panthers from Northern Colorado, where she was an assistant for three seasons ... Tulane hired Kellie Kennedy, an assistant at Richmond last season. Kennedy was a four-year letter-winner at North Carolina and has been head coach at Hollins and an assistant at North Carolina-Wilmington ... Jill Roth appointed at Quincy, replacing Anthony Portley, who became head coach at Western Texas College. Roth also will be head women's tennis coach this fall, relinquishing those duties in 1997 ... Jennifer Kuziemski, an assistant at Meredith since 1993, selected as restricted-earnings coach ... Brian Schultes hired at Eckerd. Schultes has been head coach at Middleburg High School in New York for the past 10 years.
Rutgers-Newark appointed Lori De Luca, a teacher and substance-awareness coordinator and head girls coach at an area high school ... John Marqaritis and Sara Lewis appointed at Northern Arizona. Margaritis joins Northern Arizona from Cal State San Bernardino, where he was acting head coach. Lewis has been an assistant at her alma mater, UC Riverside, since 1992 ... Fordham appointed Jessica Smith and Alayna Jankunis. Smith was an assistant coach at her alma mater, Rhode Island, last season. Jankunis is a 1996 graduate of Fordham, where she was a four-year letter-winner ... Kim Ogle and Jack Trainer hired at Miami (Ohio). Ogle has been academic coordinator at Miami for the past six years. Trainer has been an assistant at Youngstown State for three seasons ... Samantha Ezell, a graduate assistant at Wheeling Jesuit last year, named as the first full-time assistant coach at Shepherd ... Jerry Demaio hired at New York University.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY--Kori Stoffregen, assistant men's and women's cross country and track coach at Wartburg for the past six years, hired as head men's and women's cross country coach at DePauw. Stoffregen also will be head track coach ... Tony Veney appointed head women's coach at Cal State Los Angeles. He also will be head women's track and field coach. He has coached at Cal State Northridge ... Jeff Kavalunas selected at Ferris State as head of the women's program. He had been head coach for the Northwood men's and women's track and cross country programs since 1991 ... Mike Towle named at Southern Maine ... Ed Crawford hired as head women's track and cross country coach at New Mexico State ... Auburn announced the resignation of head coach Kelly Sullivan.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY ASSISTANTS--Chris Campbell selected at Ball State. He also will be assistant men's track and field coach. He was a volunteer assistant at Navy the past three seasons ... Michael Whittlesey and Tim Hall hired as assistant cross country and track coaches at North Carolina-Charlotte. Whittlesey spent six years as an assistant at Connecticut. Hall was head coach of the Queen City Striders AAU Junior Olympic Track Club for six years.
FIELD HOCKEY--Laurie Carroll appointed acting head coach at American. Carroll has been an assistant at James Madison for two years. She replaces Anne Wilkinson, who became head coach at Ohio State. Carroll also will be associate women's lacrosse coach ... Cathleen O'Brien hired at Saint Louis, where she played as an undergraduate. O'Brien, who coached at Visitation Academy for the past two years, replaces Denise Swanger, who resigned ... Jackie Neary named head coach at Cabrini. Neary began her association with Cabrini last year, when she was hired to coach the fledgling women's lacrosse team. She also was an assistant women's lacrosse coach at Temple.
FIELD HOCKEY ASSISTANT--Kerry Nadwodny appointed at St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania).
FOOTBALL--Don Powers named acting coach at Citadel, replacing Charlie Taaffe, who was suspended indefinitely after a second drunken-driving arrest in three years. Powers, a Taaffe assistant for eight seasons, was defensive coordinator. Taaffe will teach classes in the college's physical education department during his suspension. Athletics director Walt Nadzak will serve as director of football operations, overseeing the football staff ... Marion Kirby, one of the most successful coaches in the history of North Carolina high-school football, appointed at Greensboro ... Six months after reporting the rare form of cancer he suffered from was in submission, Boise State's Pokey Allen announced it has recurred and he will be taking a medical leave of absence. Assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Tom Mason was named interim head coach. Allen has a 23-14 record in three years as head coach at Boise State.
FOOTBALL ASSISTANTS--David Hill named at DePauw. He also will be assistant athletics director ... Tom Godek promoted to defensive coordinator at American International, replacing Tim Briggs, who had been on the staff for eight years. Godek has been part-time offensive line coach at the school. Briggs was hired as defensive coordinator at Susquehanna, where he joins his older brother and head football coach Steve Briggs. The younger Briggs also will be an assistant baseball coach. Briggs succeeds Greg Christodulu as Susquehanna's only football assistant. Christoldulu resigned to become a teacher and coach at his prep alma mater, Gloversville High School ... Jared Backus, a three-year letterwinner at Springfield, hired at Rutgers. He was a graduate assistant working primarily with defensive tackles and defensive special teams at his alma mater last season ... Northern State appointed Keven Lightner as offensive line coach. Lightner, a former Nebraska and Tampa Bay Buccaneers player, also will coach baseball and manage the equipment room ... Andy Friedlander selected as an assistant working with the defensive line at Hampden-Sydney. He has coached at East Carolina, Mississippi, East Tennessee State and Murray State ... Chris Landolfi and Jason Tudryn named assistant coaches at Curry. Landolfi, who spent the past two years as an assistant at Plymouth State, will coach linebackers. Tudryn, a 1996 Massachusetts graduate, will coach defensive backs.
Jeff Roth promoted to offensive coordinator at Quincy, replacing Bill Terlisner, who left for a coaching/teaching position at Alton (Illinois) Marquette High School. Chad Hayes, an assistant for two years at Sul Ross State, hired as secondary coach at Quincy, replacing Keith Lagocki. Also joining the Hawk staff is Jude Dreisbach, an assistant at Hawaii last season, who will take over as offensive line coach from Brent Fischer. Mike Cable will assist with the offensive line ... Chris Symington joined the Western Kentucky staff after spending the 1995 season as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Northwood. He fills a similar role with the Hilltoppers ... Charleston Southern appointed Nick Calcutta as assistant coach in charge of wide receivers. Most recently, Calcutta was offensive line coach at Tennessee State ... Mark McHale hired as offensive line coach at Southern Mississippi ... San Jose State selected Mark Johnson as running backs coach. Johnson was a graduate assistant last season at Oregon ... Fort Lewis appointed former Tarleton State head coach Hal McAfee as offensive coordinator.
Merchant Marine announced four new assistants: Matt Allison, defensive line coach at Maine Maritime last season, will coach tight ends and the offensive line; Rob Kolb, a graduate assistant at Stony Brook, will coach linebackers; Tom Schaller, an assistant at a number of institutions since 1979, will coach the defensive line; and Scott Waite, a 1996 Merchant Marine graduate, will work with receivers ... Scott Wilson, who coached in the high-school ranks for the past two seasons, hired as defensive line and inside linebackers coach at Westminster (Missouri) ... After serving as a graduate assistant/tight ends coach for two years at Texas, Rob Boras promoted to special assistant for the Longhorn football program. Former Texas letterman Jay Boulware replaces Boras as graduate assistant coach ... Mike Hoyt and Anthony Oden appointed at Millersville.
Mark Hicks appointed at Lenoir-Rhyne, where he will coach linebackers. Hicks spent the past four years as a high-school coach in Randleman, North Carolina ... Jim Boccher appointed running backs coach at Ferris State. Boccher, who spent last year as a graduate assistant at Rutgers, replaces Lyle "Butch" Jones, who was promoted to offensive coordinator. Jones takes over the position held by Barry Fagan, who became head coach at West Bloomfield (Michigan) High School. Also, defensive coordinator Duane Wilson was given additional duties as assistant head coach ... Corey Batoon selected at Central Missouri State. He was defensive secondary coach at St. Mary's (California) for the past two seasons ... Jay Davis named to coach offensive backs and wide receivers at Sewanee (University of the South). Davis has 25 years of head coaching experience, all at the high-school level.
Canisius announced the appointment of four assistant coaches, all of whom previously coached at the high-school level: Art Girasole will coach defensive tackles; Glen Graham will coach the secondary; Joe Raymond will oversee the running backs; and Jason Gall, a four-year member of the Canisius squad as a linebacker, returns to his alma mater as defensive ends coach ... Greg Boyce hired as offensive line coach at Shepherd, replacing Jack Linn, who resigned to become an assistant football coach at a prep school in Alabama. Boyce was a graduate assistant at Maryland last season.
MEN'S GOLF--Jay Rees, formerly at Scottsdale Community College, hired at Texas Lutheran. He succeeds John Nellermoe, who retired after 13 years as head coach to teach full time ... Brian Tirpak, coach at Bellarmine for the past five years, named at Western Kentucky. He replaces Lee Robertson, who retired after leading the Hilltopper golfers for the past six years ... John Spugnardi hired as interim coach at Bellarmine. He was an assistant at Bellarmine last season. Spugnardi will continue to serve as assistant director of public relations, a position he has held since 1989 ... Bruce Haberli hired at New York University.
WOMEN'S GOLF--Kristine (Doty) Doggett named as the first full-time coach in six years of women's golf at South Alabama. Doggett, a collegiate player at Mississippi State, had been women's golf coach at Troy State since 1993, when the school revived its women's program after a four-year hiatus ... Eric Arnold, men's golf coach at Pacific (California) for the past four seasons, hired as women's coach at San Jose State. He replaces Mark Gale, who retired from collegiate coaching after 19 seasons, including three NCAA team championships.
WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS--Suzy (Baldock) Smith named at Wisconsin-Stout. Smith was an NCAA Division I all-American and a three-time all-Pacific-10 Conference gymnast while competing at Arizona State ... Bowling Green selected Dan Connelly, an assistant at Stanford last year. Connelly has been involved in the sport at various levels since 1971. Connelly replaces Charles Simpson, who retired after coaching at Bowling Green for 22 years.
WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS ASSISTANT--Kristen Smyth named at Arizona State.
MEN'S ICE HOCKEY--Tim Watters, who spent 13 years as a defenseman in the National Hockey League and last season was an assistant with the Boston Bruins, named head coach at Michigan Tech. Watters replaces Bob Mancini, who resigned after four seasons to become an assistant coach for USA Hockey's newly created Elite Development Program ... James Duran appointed at North Adams State. He was interim head coach during the 1994-95 academic year ... Paul Pearl, head coach at Holy Cross for the past two seasons, hired as an assistant at Brown. He replaces Jamie Rice, who was promoted to first assistant.
MEN'S ICE HOCKEY ASSISTANTS--Mark Johnson, the leading scorer on the 1980 gold medal U.S. Olympic hockey team, hired as an assistant at Wisconsin, his alma mater. Johnson comes to the Badgers from the Madison Monsters of the Colonial Hockey League, where he was 1995-96 coach of the year. Johnson played for five NHL teams in 11 seasons after winning the Olympic gold medal ... Denver announced the resignation of assistant coach Greg Drechsel, who became an amateur scout with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings. Before his two-year stint at Denver, Drechsel was an assistant at Miami (Ohio) ... Ron Fogarty hired at Colgate ... Northeastern selected Mark Carlson ... Roger Grillo appointed associate coach at Vermont.
MEN'S LACROSSE--Bob Randall, head coach at Sacred Heart, hired as an assistant men's coach at Army, replacing Joe Alberici, who became an assistant at Duke ... Steve Koudelka, a two-time all-American at Gettysburg, appointed at Lynchburg. Koudelka has been an assistant men's lacrosse and men's soccer coach at his alma mater since his graduation in 1993.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE--Assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach Amy Umback promoted to interim head lacrosse coach at American. She will remain with the field hockey team as an associate coach. Umback replaces Anne Wilkinson, who became head coach at Ohio State ... New Hampshire selected Sandra Vander Hayden Bridgeman.
