EXECUTIVE COMMITTEEMore aggressive marketing, licensing program approved
The NCAA Executive Committee authorized a more aggressive NCAA marketing and licensing program at its August 7-8 meeting. The program will develop opportunities to integrate the corporate partner and licensing programs with the marks of the Association, institutions and conferences. In other business, the Executive Committee approved the 1996-97 NCAA budget (a complete report will appear in the September 2 issue of The NCAA News), authorized a re-vised NCAA Outreach Program proposed by the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Inter-ests Committee and also approved expenditures related to an ongoing examination of the sports agent issue. DIVISION IICompliance for new members addressed in Division II The NCAA Division II Management Coun-cil Transition Team has recommended ways of including new member institutions in the effort to enhance rules education and compliance. The Management Council, reacting to a proposal by Division II members of the NCAA Presidents Commission that provisional members be required to complete a compliance review before earning active Division II membership, advised the presidents that such a review should occur in the second year of an institution's provisional-membership period. INITIAL ELIGIBILITYClearinghouse makes changes to improve membership service Telephone lines reserved for NCAA institutions' use have been installed at the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse and additional staff members have been hired and trained by the clearinghouse to answer calls placed on those lines. The clearinghouse also has hired nine new staff members to answer telephone lines that will be accessible only to callers from member institutions. Staff contact: Robert A. Oliver.
Committee reviews issues related to learning disabilities
The NCAA Academic Requirements Com-mittee has reviewed a number of issues regarding accommodations for student-athletes with learning disabilities .
Suggestions from the U.S. Justice Department were forwarded to the Academic Requirements Committee after a June meeting between representatives of both groups, and the committee is encouraged by the Justice Department's conclusions.
