Harris takes over as MEAC commissioner
Charles Harris, a 25-year veteran of intercollegiate athletics, took over the helm of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference July 15, becoming the conference's fifth commissioner.
Harris was assistant director of athletics at Michigan from 1973 until 1979, when he became AD at Pennsylvania. He left Pennsylvania in 1985 to take the top position in the Arizona State athletics department.
Harris is only the second full-time commissioner for the conference. He succeeds Ken Free, who left after 18 years in the position. The MEAC was established in 1970 and includes 10 Division I schools.

Carroll has been on the Cameron staff since September 1990, when he was hired as director of the school's fitness center ... Lance West, associate vice-president for institutional advancement and director of athletics development at Marshall, named athletics director there ... Mark Molesworth hired as AD at Wisconsin-Platteville. He had been assistant AD and coordinator of sports marketing at Massachusetts-Lowell for the past three years ... Coppin State head men's basketball coach Ron "Fang" Mitchell given additional duties as athletics director. Mitchell has served as associate AD for community services and program support for the past two years, in addition to his coaching duties. Mitchell replaces Clayton McNeill, who relinquished his duties as AD to concentrate on his position as vice-president for student life.
Massachusetts-Dartmouth appointed Kenneth McBryde to replace Robert Dowd, who was serving on an interim basis. Dowd will remain in the athletics department as a staff associate in charge of educational programs. McBryde was AD at Morgan State from 1993 until 1995 and at Virginia State before that ... S. Page Cotton Jr. appointed director of athletics and recreational sports at DePauw ... Pittsburgh announced the resignation of Oval Jaynes ... George Williams, track and field coach at St. Augustine's, given additional duties as AD.

Utah appointed Amy Hackett as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator. She held a similar position at Santa Clara and also has directed West Coast Conference men's and women's basketball tournaments ... Desney Byrd promoted to associate AD at Coppin State after serving as associate director of financial aid for the past eight years. Byrd replaces Jesse Batten, who accepted a position in the Coppin State student-life office ... New Mexico appointed Jack Harney as associate AD for development ... David "Bo" Bahnsen promoted to associate AD at LSU after serving as assistant AD for compliance since 1989. Bahnsen has served in various positions in the athletics department since his graduation in 1982 ... East Tennessee State appointed Randy Eaton ... Kerry Phayre, former women's basketball coach at Columbia-Barnard, appointed assistant AD and head women's basketball coach at Assumption. Phayre was head coach at Columbia-Barnard for five years ... East Tennessee State promoted Pat Britz to assistant AD for student services and compliance ... New Mexico announced the following promotions: Sean Johnson to assistant AD for marketing and promotions; Mark Koson to assistant AD for tickets and customer relations; and Greg Remington to assistant AD for media relations.
Miami (Florida) announced several promotions: Roger Bell of the academic support office, to assistant AD for community service; Neil Brooks, a member of the academic support and compliance staffs for 21/2 years, to assistant AD and director of academic services; Linda Saumell to assistant director for academic services; and Pam Young, ticket manager, to assistant AD for ticket operations. Miami also announced the appointments of Patrick Nero, assistant AD for fund-raising at Marquette, as assistant AD for major gifts/special events, and Kevin Rochlitz, assistant AD for marketing at Utah State, who assumes similar duties at Miami.
Eric Ruden appointed assistant AD for external affairs at Navy. Ruden was sports information director at Indiana State for five years before being named marketing director there last year ... San Diego announced the resignation of Regina Sullivan. Sullivan also was senior woman administrator ... Erin O'Donnell named assistant director of athletics/facilities at St. John's (New York) ... COACHES
BASEBALL--Texas announced the retirement of Cliff Gustafson, the most victorious coach in Division I history. After earning a letter in baseball at Texas in 1952, he led the Longhorns for 29 seasons, winning national championships in 1975 and 1983. He finished his career with a record of 1,466-377-2 ... Jason Reedy, a two-sport standout at Earlham, named interim head baseball coach and assistant football coach at his alma mater, replacing Jeff Parker, who had been head baseball coach for the past three seasons. Parker will teach at Tri-County North High School in Lewisburg, Ohio, where he will be head baseball and assistant football coach. Reedy was a four-year starter in baseball and a starter his senior year in football ... Frank Pait selected at Lenoir-Rhyne after serving as assistant baseball coach at Wingate for the past three seasons ... Tulane signed head coach Rick Jones to a new seven-year contract. Jones is 116-70 in three seasons at Tulane ... Assistant coach Richard Skeel promoted to head coach at Bethune-Cookman. Skeel had been an assistant for the past three seasons. He will continue as director of compliance.
Kevin McMullan, head coach at Indiana (Pennsylvania) for the past three years, hired as an assistant coach at St. John's (New York) ... Fort Hays State selected Bob Fornelli to replace Curtis Hammeke, who became activities director at Great Bend (Kansas) High School. Fornelli spent the last five seasons as assistant coach at Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kansas ... New Hampshire's Chris Serino resigned as head baseball coach to return
to coaching men's ice hockey. Serino was the top assistant ice hockey coach at New Hampshire before becoming baseball coach three years ago. He continued as a part-time hockey coach while coaching baseball. Assistant coach Rob Carpentier was appointed to replace Serino. Carpentier had been an assistant since 1994 ... BASEBALL ASSISTANTS--Southern Mississippi announced the resignation of Doug Lambeth after nine years as an assistant coach, mostly as a pitching coach. He was replaced by Corky Palmer, who returned to his alma mater after 10 years at Meridian Community College. Palmer previously was an assistant coach at Southern Mississippi in 1985-86 ... Joe Regruth hired at Xavier (Ohio) to work with pitchers and handle recruiting. Regruth had been head coach at Mount St. Joseph since establishing the baseball program there three years ago ... William Graham, assistant coach at Crockett (Texas) High School, hired at Lincoln Memorial ... Rob Cooper appointed at Tulane. Also, assistant coach Jim Schlossnagle was promoted to recruiting coordinator.
Tony Lachowetz, an assistant at Springfield for the past three years, appointed at New Hampshire. Lachowetz has been a strength and conditioning coach for the men's ice hockey and baseball programs at New Hampshire ... Mervyl Melendez hired as Bethune-Cookman's first full-time assistant. ... Timm previously was assistant basketball and football coach and head baseball coach at Cornell College from 1989 to 1993 ... Patrick Skerry, an assistant at Stonehill last season, hired as head coach at Curry. Skerry was an assistant for three years at Tufts before moving to Stonehill last season ... Lander promoted assistant coach Roger "Chipper" Bagwell to head coach. Bagwell has been an assistant for the past six years as well as director of university camps and executive director of the athletics booster organization ... Western Carolina extended the contract of Phil Hopkins, who led the school to its first Southern Conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance last season. Gannon Baker hired at Belmont Abbey ... Maryland appointed Dave Dickerson as an assistant. Dickerson has held similar positions at Marshall and Radford ... Henderson was head coach at Cal Poly Pomona before joining the South Dakota State staff ... Wisconsin-Stout named Carlene Willkom-Hochhalter as head coach of the women's cross country team. Drew was the assistant coach for the men's and women's cross country and track and field teams at Smith for the past two years ... Monica Morgan hired at Monmouth (New Jersey).
FIELD HOCKEY ASSISTANTS--Northeastern appointed Patti Bossio as a full-time assistant ... Margaret Kavanaugh hired at Salem State ... Hartwick selected Jennifer Sparacio, a 1996 Colgate graduate who was a four-year letter-winner in field hockey for the Red Raiders ... Dawn Wenzel hired at Millersville.
FOOTBALL--Fort Valley State's Doug Porter announced his retirement, effective at the conclusion of the 1996 season. Porter has led the Fort Valley State squad for 16 years and has a record of 106-61-3. He has a total of 42 years coaching ... Joe Palka resigned at St. Joseph's (Indiana) to become head football coach at Bryan (Ohio) High School. Assistant head coach Brendan Flaherty was named interim head coach.
FOOTBALL ASSISTANTS--East Tennessee State hired Gary Dandridge ... Don Wistrcill resigned as head women's cross country coach at Winona State to become an assistant football coach at the school ... Chicago hired J. B. Wells as assistant football and track and field coach. Wells has been offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coach at Bates since 1994.
Nichols announced its assistant football coaches for the 1996 season: Bill Carven, receivers coach; Steve Corridori, secondary; Booker Lester, defensive line; Niles Nelson, offensive coordinator; Frank Robinson, offense; and Brad Thompson, quarterbacks/receivers ... Curtis Heiderman named full-time assistant football coach and assistant wrestling coach at Cornell College ... Frank Scelfo hired as wide receivers coach at Tulane. Scelfo is a 14-year veteran of high-school and junior college coaching in Louisiana and Texas ... Andy Hill, head coach at Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College for the past two years, selected as wide receivers coach at Missouri. Hill was a wide receiver for Missouri in the early 1980s.
Gene Williams hired at Missouri Western State to coach the defensive line. Williams was an outside linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL. He was a graduate assistant coach at Texas Christian while completing his master's degree last season. Missouri Western State also promoted two assistants: Todd Throckmorton from assistant coach to assistant head coach and Clarence Holley from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach ... Andy Hendel appointed defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky. Hendel spent the past five seasons as an assistant at St. John Fisher ... Kevin Keeffe joined the Emporia State staff as offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator. He was tight ends and tackles coach at Temple for the past three years ... Nevada named Steve Mooshagian as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Brian Jenkins hired at Eastern Illinois ... Edward Breslin appointed assistant coach of the secondary at St. John's (New York), which also announced the appointments of William Getchell as receivers coach and Scott Williams as defensive line coach ... Pace announced its football staff: Lou DiRienzo, codefensive coordinator and defensive line coach; Vincent Caporaso, tight ends and offensive tackles coach; and Jerry Petersen, outside linebackers coach.
MEN'S GOLF--Eldon Hutchison resigned as head men's coach at Wayne State (Nebraska) to take a position in Fairbury, Nebraska. He also was director of sports and recreational facilities. Greg McDermott, Wayne State head men's basketball coach, will assume additional duties as golf coach ... Michael O'Toole named men's coach at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis ... Mike Cancilla hired at Iona ... North Carolina-Charlotte appointed Doug Ehmann.
WOMEN'S GOLF--Jennifer Reimer named the first women's golf coach at Ohio Northern. She also will be assistant women's basketball coach. She was a graduate assistant women's basketball coach at Ohio Northern during the past two years ... Jim Kincaid, a golf professional with experience at several area golf courses and currently the pro at a Springfield, Ohio, country club, hired at Wittenberg. Kincaid was team captain and most valuable player on the Wittenberg golf team his senior season.

MEN'S ICE HOCKEY--Tim Whitehead, assistant coach at Massachusetts-Lowell for the past five years, promoted to head coach. He was an assistant at Middlebury and at Maine before joining the Massachusetts-Lowell staff.
MEN'S ICE HOCKEY ASSISTANTS--Chris Serino, head baseball coach at New Hampshire, returned to full-time status as an assistant ice hockey coach. Serino was the top hockey assistant before taking the baseball position three years ago. He had continued as a part-time hockey coach.
MEN'S LACROSSE--Skidmore appointed Terry Corcoran, head coach at Pennsylvania for the past two seasons. He was head coach at Washington (Maryland) for 12 seasons before that ... Marc Van Arsdale hired at Pennsylvania.

Bill Marolt, athletics director at Colorado, appointed president and chief executive officer of U.S. Skiing. Marolt replaces Tim Leiweke, who left to become president of the NHL Los Angeles Kings. Marolt has been AD at Colorado since 1984. He directed the U.S. Skiing Alpine program from 1978 to 1984 and has been a long-time member of the association's board of directors.

NOTABLES
The Texas Foundation for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women awarded its Susanna Garrison Graduate Scholarship to Monique Taylor of Texas Woman's University. Taylor, a gymnast at the school from 1992 to 1996, is on the waiting list for admission to the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She also is the recipient of an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
Texas Woman's University head gymnastics coach Frank Kudlac named Division II coach of the year by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women. This is the fourth straight year Kudlac has received the honor, which is voted on by other Division II coaches. The Division I coach of the year is Valorie Kondos of UCLA and the Division III honor was awarded to Dick Stapleton of Rhode Island College.
Calvin sociology professor Don Wilson has been named Division III Sears Die-Hard Fan of the Year. Wilson was nominated for the award by Calvin sports information director Jeff Febus and Calvin media relations director Phil de Haan. Wilson retired in May after 34 years at Calvin, during which time he missed only one home men's basketball game. As part of the award, Wilson receives an all-expenses paid trip for two to the collegiate national championship of his choice next year. Grand prize winners in other divisions were: Division I, Gilles Pellerin, a fan of Southern California; Division II, Jay Peck, a fan of Western State; and NAIA, Paul DeJonge, a fan of Northwestern (Iowa).
DEATHS
Gene Fetter, former assistant football coach at Arizona and Arizona State, died June 11 in Tucson, Arizona. He was 74.
Anthony "Tony" Montonaro, a star wrestler and golfer at Ohio State, died July 6 at his home in Granville, Ohio. He was 81. Montonaro coached wrestling at Ohio State in the early 1940s before entering the Navy during World War II. He was an associate professor emeritus at Ohio State and was inducted into the Collegiate Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Ohio Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Officials Hall of Fame of the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Ken Norton, the all-time most-victorious men's basketball coach and former athletics director at Manhattan, died of a heart attack July 11 while vacationing at his summer home in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He was 82. Norton coached the basketball team for 22 years and produced an overall record of 310-205. He also coached golf and baseball. After coaching, Norton was Manhattan's AD for 12 years before retiring in1979.
Vanessa Reaves, a 1996 Coker graduate and member of the Lady Cobra basketball team, died July 8 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident two days earlier in her hometown of Loris, South Carolina. Reaves graduated in May with a degree in physical education.
Former Western Maryland athletics director and coach Charles Havens died May 12 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was 92. Havens was a 1930 graduate of Western Maryland, earning all-America honorable-mention status in football from The Associated Press as a senior. He played for the NFL's Frankford Yellowjackets in 1930 before returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 1931. He was the school's head football coach from 1936 to 1941 and from 1946 to 1956. During his tenure, he also coached baseball, basketball and boxing.
