Rowing develops scoring system
The NCAA Women's Rowing Committee has developed a scoring system and tournament manual for the inaugural National Collegiate Women's Rowing Championship, which will be conducted May 30-June 1, 1997.
The newly approved scoring system (see accompanying chart) will be used to determine team place finishes. The committee stipulated that only sculls from teams selected for the championship will be awarded points.
The committee, which met June 19-21, also determined that preliminaries in all events would be conducted Friday and Saturday, May 30-31, with finals to be held Sunday, June 1. A practice schedule was established for Wednesday through Saturday of championship week.
Regarding championship allocations, the committee voted to recommend to the NCAA Executive Committee that 38 of the 296 berths be reserved for competitors from Divisions II and III (two sculls in the No. 1 eights and four in the fours).
The committee cited sponsorship in both divisions as rationale for reserving a percentage of berths.
