GTE Academic All-America baseball team named

Infielders from Texas Tech and St. Francis (Illinois) are this year's team members of the year on the university- and college-division GTE Academic All-America baseball teams.

Senior Clint Bryant of Texas Tech, the Southwest Conference's player of the year, was honored in the university division as the player who best represents the qualities of an Academic All-America team member. He compiled a 3.460 grade-point average (4.000 scale) in finance.

The college division's team member of the year is senior first baseman Brian Mazurek, who compiled a 3.920 GPA as a political science major at St. Francis.

The GTE Academic All-America teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.200.

Following are this year's Academic All-America teams in baseball.

University division

First team

Pitchers -- R. A. Dickey, Tennessee, 3.290 grade-point average in literature; James Frush, Texas Tech, 3.910 in history.

Catcher -- Matt Quatraro, Old Dominion, 3.500 in history.

Infielders -- Casey Blake, Wichita State, 3.500 in sports business; Clint Bryant, Texas Tech, 3.460 in finance; Chris Heintz, South Florida, 3.560 in business; Travis Young, New Mexico, 3.760 in biology.

Outfielders -- Brey Curtis, South Alabama, 3.870 in political science; Dan Kneeshaw, Southwest Missouri State, 3.840 in history; Brian Schaller, La Salle, 3.900 in economics/accounting.

Designated hitter -- Josh Dimmick, Kansas, 3.860 in genetics.

Second team

Pitchers -- Paul Erschen, Northern Illinois, 3.910 in studio art; Nick Witte, Ball State, 3.630 in industrial technology.

Catcher -- Brad Allison, Morehead State, 3.780 in radio and television.

Infielders -- Mark Chonko, Ohio State, 3.380 in mathematics; David Eckstein, Florida, 3.610 in political science; Eddy Furniss, LSU, 3.770 in premedicine; Andy Matko, Wright State, 4.000 in biology/
premedicine.

Outfielders -- Bill Burgei, Bowling Green, 3.520 in accounting; Nicholas Cafaro, South Florida, 3.460 in engineering; Jake Weber, North Carolina State, 3.610 in mechanical engineering.

Designated hitter -- James Vallillo, Towson State, 3.250 in marketing.
