NAIA's Chasteen resigns, effective July 31

James R. Chasteen, president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, has resigned, effective July 31.

Chasteen informed the administrative committee of the Council of Presidents (the governing body of the NAIA) of his decision at its June 18 meeting. He said he wanted to pursue other opportunities.

Bill Patterson, executive vice-president of the NAIA, will serve as interim president.

Chasteen was the fifth person to lead the NAIA, assuming his duties January 1, 1991. A native of Alabama, Chasteen has a long association with the Alabama educational system as a student, teacher, administrator and college president. He was a charter member of the NAIA Council of Presidents while president at Athens State College.

During Chasteen's tenure, the NAIA moved its national office from Kansas City, Missouri, to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Eugene Marshall appointed athletics director and director of the sports and recreation center at Staten Island. Marshall has been on the athletics staff at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for 11 years, holding several posts, including director of athletics, coordinator of special events and conference services, head women's volleyball coach, and head men's basketball coach ... Jeff May, Lander vice-president for university advancement and executive director of the Lander Foundation, selected to replace retiring AD Finis Horne as Lander athletics director. May has been on the Lander staff 23 years, the last 11 in university advancement. He is one of three Lander athletes to have his basketball jersey retired ... Dennis Davidson promoted from sports information director to AD at Catawba. He replaces Tom Childress, who resigned to become vice-president in charge of development, admissions and athletics ... Wyoming appointed Lee Moon as athletics director, replacing interim AD Dan Viola. Moon has been AD at Marshall since 1988 and served before that at Kansas State ... Mike Moore hired at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis.

Centenary's Laneigh Clark given additional duties as assistant athletics director for women's athletics. She is head women's softball coach and senior woman administrator ... Tom Bilello hired as full-time assistant AD at Longwood. He had been interim assistant AD after completing a two-year internship with the Colonial Athletic Association.

COACHES

BASEBALL--Lincoln Memorial announced the resignation of Kenny Creehan. His assistant, Tony Skole, was named head coach at the school, where he also is athletics development officer. Creehan had been head coach since 1992. Skole has been an assistant at Lincoln Memorial for three years ... Catawba's Jim Gantt promoted from assistant coach after the retirement of Dave Jones, who coached during the previous two seasons. Gantt was an assistant for seven seasons ... Chad Hefner hired at Alderson-Broaddus ... Arkansas-Little Rock appointed Brian Rhees.

BASEBALL ASSISTANT--Kenny Morrison hired at Catawba, where he was a student assistant in 1994 and 1995.

MEN'S BASKETBALL--Scott Thompson, former head coach at Wichita State and Rice, named head coach at Cornell. Thompson coached at Wichita State from 1992 to 1996 and at Rice from 1987 to 1992 ... Rudy Keeling appointed at Northeastern. During eight years as head coach at Maine, Keeling earned 1993-94 coach-of-the-year honors in the North Atlantic Conference after leading the Black Bears to a school-record 20 victories ... Curry selected Patrick Skerry.

MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANT--Grady Bean named assistant coach at Cal State Sacramento, which also announced the promotion of Rob Richards to full-time assistant ... Bridgewater (Virginia) hired Chris Ihle, replacing Jeff Berry, who was an assistant for the 1995-96 season. Ihle also will be head tennis coach. He was a four-year basketball starter at Bridgewater and was an assistant coach during the 1993-94 season ... Wheeler Brown selected as assistant coach at Wheeling Jesuit. He also will be compliance coordinator ... Former Wheaton (Illinois) all-American Nate Frank hired at his alma mater as a part-time assistant coach. He completed his college career in 1995 and played professionally last season in Ireland ... Charleston (South Carolina) promoted restricted-earnings coach Jim Yarbrough to full-time assistant. He has been on the staff for two years. Chris Evans was appointed to the restricted-earnings coach position ... St. Mary's (California) hired Dave Bollwinkel as a full-time assistant. A 19-year collegiate coach, Bollwinkel spent the 1995-96 season as a scout for the NBA's Washington Bullets.

Siena promoted Tony Newsom to full-time assistant, replacing Steve Bernath, who left to enter private business. Also, Steve Evans was hired as a part-time coach. He was an assistant at Le Moyne for two years ... George Barber appointed at Bradley. He was an assistant for two years at Kentucky. The school also promoted Pat Donahue to top assistant and Duane Broussard from restricted-earnings coach to full-time assistant ... Penn State hired Mike Boyd as assistant coach. He was head coach at Cleveland State for six seasons, beginning in 1990. He led Cleveland State to a 22-6 season in 1993 and a 79-88 record overall ... Massachusetts announced several appointments: John Robic promoted from assistant to associate coach. Robic has been on the Massachusetts staff for eight years and takes over duties formerly belonging to new head coach James Flint. Also, Geoff Arnold and Tony Barbee were named assistant coaches. Arnold was assistant coach for five years at St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania) and Barbee is entering his first season as a coach ... Jim Saia hired at UCLA.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL--Ardie McInelly hired at Idaho State after four years as an assistant at Weber State. She also has coached at Montana State and Pacific (California).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Dan Hughes, assistant men's coach for the past five years at Toledo, named assistant women's coach at the school, replacing Jodi Steyer, who resigned ... Providence announced the appointment of three assistants: Mary Helen Walker, who has been an assistant at Southern Illinois for two seasons; Serri Jones, an assistant at Buffalo last year and earlier at Buffalo State for five years; and Kerri Reaves, a leading scorer for Marquette who graduated this spring ... Jeff Dow selected at UC Irvine after serving as head assistant coach at New Mexico State since 1992 ... Alvis Rogers appointed at Duquesne. He has been assistant academic coordinator for Duquesne and was an assistant coach at Shaw during the 1993-94 season ... Amy Palmer hired at Baylor ... East Tennessee State appointed Angelo Botta ... Tennessee-Martin selected Tara Tansil ... Delaware hired Jeanine Radice.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY--Redlands appointed Matt Belfield as interim head coach for the men's and women's teams, replacing Clay Brooks, who retired. Brooks was hired at Redlands in 1968 as a part-time track and football assistant coach and in 1979 became head track and field and cross country coach. Belfield was an assistant coach at Redlands from 1992 to 1995 and has been assistant track and field coach at Colgate since 1995. He also will coach track and field at Redlands ... Jim Lear promoted to head cross country and track and field coach at Duquesne after two years as an assistant. He also coached at Pittsburgh ... Mike Tapia hired as head coach of the men's and women's programs at Cal State Hayward. He was an assistant coach during the 1995 season and competed for the school from 1987 to 1991.

FIELD HOCKEY--Kim Farmer hired at Nazareth, where she is a former basketball and volleyball player. She has been a high-school field hockey coach for seven years.

FOOTBALL--Siena named Ed Zaloom as its first full-time football coach. He has been offensive coordinator at Albany (New York) since 1983. Siena is entering its 31st year of football.

FOOTBALL ASSISTANT--Former Slippery Rock standout defensive tackle and nose guard Greg Kahn hired as an assistant in charge of outside linebackers at Susquehanna.

MEN'S GOLF--Catawba's Chip Hester promoted from assistant to head men's coach after David Bennett stepped aside to devote more time to his duties as head football coach. Hester was an assistant for one season.

WOMEN'S GOLF--Carrie Leary hired as women's coach at Cal State Northridge ... Ulrika Fisher appointed women's coach at Arkansas.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE--Julie Myers named head coach at Virginia after serving in the post on an interim basis since October. Myers was an assistant coach for four years before that ... Celine Cunningham hired at Columbia-Barnard to head the first varsity women's lacrosse team at the school. Columbia-Barnard added lacrosse and field hockey during the past academic year and the teams competed on the club level last year. Cunningham replaces Susan Eichner, who coached both field hockey and lacrosse last year and will be head field hockey coach and assistant lacrosse coach this year.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER--Markus Roeders hired as women's coach at Marquette. He was an assistant for the Marquette men's and women's teams during the past two seasons ... Rochester Institute of Technology hired Bill Garno as men's head coach and and Tom Natalie as women's coach. Garno returns to the school where he was a premier defender from 1983 to 1985. Natalie assumes his first collegiate coaching assignment, but he has coached at various levels in the Rochester, New York, area ... Mike Haines, a 1993 graduate of Kalamazoo and a former soccer player, named women's soccer coach at his alma mater, replacing Scott Forrester, who accepted a position as assistant coach at Michigan ... Towson State appointed Ron Rainey to head its women's program. Rainey has been associate women's coach at Cincinnati and was head coach at Wisconsin-Parkside ... Long-time player and coach Tony Paris hired to begin the St. Leo women's program as a club sport this fall.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER ASSISTANTS--Penn State-Behrend appointed Chuck Baranich as assistant men's and women's coach. Baranich graduated in May after playing for Alfred ... Diane Drake hired at North Carolina-Greensboro as assistant women's coach. She replaces Bettina Fletcher, who was named head coach at Oklahoma. Draks spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at LSU.

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL--Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis appointed J. T. Schrage Jr.

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL ASSISTANTS--Cyndi Justice hired at Bridgewater (Virginia). She was head volleyball and women's basketball coach at Chase City High School in Forest City, North Carolina ... Purdue announced the resignation of Dottie Conroy.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING--Mary Kay Samko, an assistant swimming coach at Boston College for the last two years, named aquatics director and head men's and women's swimming coach at Bentley.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING ASSISTANTS--North Carolina hired David Fox, Yann deFabrique and Peter Cloutier as assistant swimming coaches.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS--Chris Ihle hired at Bridgewater (Virginia). He also is assistant men's basketball coach ... Wingate appointed Gary Hamill as men's coach, replacing Marcus Luke, who resigned. Hamill will retain his duties as men's soccer coach.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD--Redlands appointed Matt Belfield as interim head coach for the men's and women's programs, replacing Clay Brooks, who requested and was granted early retirement. Brooks was hired at Redlands in 1968 as a part-time track and football assistant coach and in 1979 became head track and field and cross country coach. Belfield was an assistant cross country coach at Redlands from 1992 to 1995 and has been assistant track and field coach at Colgate since 1995. He also will coach cross country at Redlands ... Jim Lear promoted to head cross country and track and field coach at Duquesne after two years as an assistant. He also coached at Pittsburgh.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL--Charlie Brande, a veteran of Orange County volleyball, named head coach at UC Irvine. He has been director of the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club since 1976 and has been an assistant coach at Hawaii and UCLA.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL--Ann Marie Bahantka returned to Quinnipiac as head coach, replacing Tim Gaiser, who held the position on an interim basis for the past season. Bahantka also led the team in 1992 and 1993 ... Columbia-Barnard selected Carolyn Elwood to replace Peggy Schultz, who left after nine seasons to become director of athletics at National Cathedral School. Elwood has been head coach at Davidson and an assistant coach at William and Mary ... Army promoted assistant coach Lynn Fielitz to replace Bob Gambardella, who left to become director of youth development and programs for USA Volleyball ... John Gump appointed by Lehigh to replace Jack Casteel, who retired after four seasons. Gump was head coach at Allentown for eight years ... Cal State Hayward hired Jim Spagle to replace Sharon Campbell, who became head coach at Eastern Oregon State. Spagle was head coach at Chabot College for the past four years, compiling an overall record of 131-22 ... Wentworth Institute announced the resignation of Raina Sturtz, head coach for three seasons after playing for the Leopards for four seasons.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL ASSISTANTS--Cal State Hayward appointed Rob Wullenwaber and Meg Kilday as assistant coaches ... North Carolina-Greensboro hired Susan Deaton to replace Tami Perkins, who left to enter private business. Dean has coached in North Carolina at the high-school level since graduating from Appalachian State, where she earned four varsity letters.

STAFF

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT DIRECTOR--Joanna Camp selected as the first full-time director of the academic enhancement program at North Carolina-Greensboro. Camp was a graduate assistant in the program for the past two years. She is charged with assisting Spartan student-athletes with their academic progress.

BUSINESS MANAGER--Martha Connell promoted from administrative support manager in the Centenary athletics department to athletics business manager. She replaces Terry Finklea, who was promoted to compliance and eligibility coordinator.

COMPLIANCE COORDINATORS--Wheeler Brown hired at Wheeling Jesuit. He also will be assistant men's basketball coach ... Centenary selected Terry Finklea as compliance and eligibility coordinator. Finklea has been associated with Centenary athletics for 15 years, most recently as athletics business manager.

SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTORS--Guilford appointed David Walters as sports information director. He was assistant SID at North Carolina-Greensboro for the past 10 months ... San Francisco State appointed Kevin Gilmore as SID. Gilmore has 11 years of sports information experience, most recently at Cal State Los Angeles ... Vassar announced the resignation of Susan Colodny.

Sports information assistant--Tommy Newsom, assistant sports information director at Baylor, appointed director of media relations at the Southland Conference.

TICKET MANAGER--Jim Dugoni hired at Pacific (California) as ticket manager and associate director of marketing and events. He was on the staff at Stanford for the past four years as a football graduate assistant and athletics development intern, in addition to serving as director of prospect research in the Stanford law school office of external relations.

CONFERENCES

The Southland Conference hired Tommy Newsom as director of media relations. He has been assistant sports information director at Baylor. The conference also hired Sue Donohoe as assistant commissioner.

The Big 12 Conference named Steve Pace as chief financial officer and business manager, Lori Ebihara as coordinator of compliance and Chris Thiesen as assistant service bureau director.

The Western Athletic Conference named Jenny Ross as communications department intern.

ASSOCIATIONS

The Sugar Bowl appointed former Vanderbilt athletics director Paul Hoolahan as its executive director. Hoolahan resigned at Vanderbilt in December 1995 after six years at the school.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

Maryland-Baltimore County will join the Northeast Conference effective in September 1998. The Retrievers have resigned from the Big South Conference but will fulfill an obligation to remain in the league through the 1997-98 season. School officials said the geography and scheduling of the Northeast Conference were more compatible with its needs.

AGREEMENTS

Six Division I athletics conferences have created the Conference Marketing Group, a consortium designed to develop collective sales and marketing opportunities for the leagues and their members. The Colonial Athletic Association and the Midwestern Collegiate, Missouri Valley, Ohio Valley, Southern and Sun Belt Conferences formed the cooperative arrangement to increase their impact on regional and national sports markets.
