North Central women's soccer hires Cohen

Jason Cohen, the all-time leading scorer in DePaul men's soccer history, has been named the head women's soccer coach at North Central. In addition to coaching, Cohen will be athletics equipment manager.

A 1990 DePaul graduate, Cohen led the Blue Demons in scoring three times and holds the university's career records for points (77), goals (28), assists (21) and games played (82). He ranked in the top 20 in scoring in both 1986 and 1987. In 1989, Cohen earned the Edward Riley Memorial Award, presented by DePaul for leadership, character and academic achievement in addition to athletics accomplishment.

Cohen continued at DePaul after graduation, serving in many capacities. He was assistant director of athletics facilities, assistant equipment manager, special-event assistant and collegiate-event assistant. For the past two seasons, Cohen has been assistant coach for the men's varsity soccer and the women's club soccer teams.

Cohen takes over a program in only its third year of varsity status.

Wisconsin-Parkside appointed Lenny Klaver as AD and chair of the department of health, physical education and recreation. Klaver has been at Wayne State (Nebraska) the past 13 years, serving in many capacities including director of sport management program, head baseball coach, women's basketball coach and assistant AD ... Calvin announced selection of Nancy Meyer as women's athletics director, replacing Doris Zuidema, who is retiring in August as women's athletics director and professor of physical education. Zuidema was at Calvin 33 years, including 25 as women's AD. Meyer has been head women's cross country coach at Calvin for 10 years and was interim AD in 1990 when Zuidema was on sabbatical ... Savannah State announced the resignation of Frank Ellis and named Hornsby Howell as interim AD ... Bob Bockrath, formerly of Texas Tech, hired at Alabama. Texas Tech appointed Gerald Myers as interim AD ... Lake Superior State announced the resignation of Jeff Jackson, who became U.S. national hockey coach. Jackson also was men's ice hockey coach Messiah announced the resignation of Layton Shoemaker to become director of special projects for college development. He also was men's soccer coach.

Xavier (Ohio) announced the promotion of Mike Hermann and Ginger Fulton to associate ADs. Hermann has been assistant AD for marketing and Fulton was assistant AD for administration and compliance and senior woman administrator ... Georgia announced the retirement of Elizabeth Murphey, associate AD for women's sports and senior woman administrator.

Marty Schwartz resigned as assistant AD for development at Maryland-Baltimore County, effective August 1, to become president of Student-Athlete Information Link. Schwartz had been at the school 6 1/2 years ... Jim Kuebler hired at Stetson, replacing Jeff Altier, who was promoted to interim AD. Kuebler returned to Stetson after a year as director of ticket operations for Florida Citrus Sports. He was director of marketing, promotions and ticketing at Stetson from 1993 to 1995 ... Bill Foti given additional duties as assistant AD at Colby-Sawyer, where he has been men's basketball coach since 1992. Foti will be recruiting coordinator, compliance officer and will monitor academic eligibility ... La Roche men's basketball coach Jim Tinkey given additional duties as assistant AD ... Mel Gibson, assistant AD at North Carolina-Wilmington, resigned ... Fred Battenfield, director of sports information at Rollins, resigned to become assistant AD for public affairs at Barry.

Glada Gunnells, assistant AD at Georgia, appointed senior woman administrator. She succeeds Elizabeth Murphey, who retired.

COACHES

BASEBALL--Mark Simeone hired at Springfield, replacing Charlie Roys, who retired after 27 years with the program, the last 18 as head coach. Simeone, a four-year letter winner at Springfield, was head coach at American International the past four years ... Pat Harrison selected at Mississippi after two years as head coach at Pepperdine. He also has been an assistant coach at Oklahoma and Southern California. Harrison replaced Don Kessinger, who resigned to take an administrative position in the athletics department. He compiled a 185-153 record in six seasons ... Averett promoted Ed Fulton to head coach. Fulton was assistant coach in the program's inaugural season in 1996 ... Georgia selected junior college coach Robert Sapp. Sapp coached Middle Georgia College for 20 years and won four national championships ... Delta State's Bill Marchant resigned a week after completing the winningest season in school history and three years after he was paralyzed from the chest down in an automobile accident. Marchant compiled a 283-127-1 record in eight seasons.

Billy Almon, a former all-American at Brown, resigned as coach of his alma mater to spend more time with his family. In four years, Almon's teams were 49-107, including 12-25 this year ... Lynn announced the resignation of Tony Casas to take the same position at South Carolina-Aiken ... Miami signed Ron Morris to a five-year contract ... Maine announced the contract of John Winkin would not be renewed ... Alderson-Broaddus announced the retirement of Jack Funk.

BASEBALL ASSISTANTS--Xavier (Ohio) announced that pitching coach Dave Howicz has resigned after four years to enter private business ... Jeff Stephenson, former baseball player at Lincoln Memorial, hired as an assistant coach there.

MEN'S BASKETBALL--Marty Simmons, assistant coach at Evansville for six years, hired at Wartburg, replacing Howard Gauthier, who coached the Knights for three years ... California (Pennsylvania) appointed Bill Brown, head coach at Kenyon the past eight years. He also was associate athletics director at Kenyon ... James "Bruiser" Flint promoted to head coach at Massachusetts. He had been an assistant since 1989 ... Larry Mangino appointed at Ferrum after five seasons as head coach at Clark (Massachusetts). He also has been an assistant at George Washington and Yale ... Elmhurst named Mark Scherer, an assistant at Valparaiso since 1992 ... Hamline appointed Tom Gilles, who was interim coach during the 1995-96 season. Gilles also will teach in the physical education department and serve as sports information director ... Delaware State announced the contract of Fred Goodman would not be renewed. Goodman guided Delaware State to a 18-38 record in two seasons ... North Texas extended the contract of Tim Jankovich through 2000 ... Rudy Keeling hired at Northeastern.

MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Ben Jacobson, a former basketball standout and graduate assistant at North Dakota, named an assistant coach at his alma mater ... Miami (Ohio) hired Ray Martin, a 16-year coaching veteran and former player at Notre Dame. Martin was an assistant at Florida Atlantic last season. He also has been an assistant at Shaw and Tennessee ... Gerald White, an assistant at Tennessee-Chattanooga for three years, hired at Georgia State ... Campbell appointed Mike Winiecki ... Jeffrey Wilson and Joseph Mantegna hired at Lehigh.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL--Marquette promoted assistant coach Terri Mitchell to head coach. Mitchell had been an assistant at the school since 1991 ... Todd Buchanan hired at Montevallo ... Richmond named Bob Foley.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Zeki Blanding hired at American. She was a four-year letter winner at Duke and has played professionally in Austria since graduation ... Brenda Berriman hired at Regis (Colorado) ... Appalachian State appointed Lori Wynn as restricted-earnings coach ... Bob Hutchings and Julie Diehl appointed at Army.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY--Kevin Bowden hired to head the men's and women's program at South Carolina-Spartanburg. Bowden, who was an assistant at the school for two seasons, replaces Mike Massey, who resigned after six years to coach cross country and track at Union (South Carolina) High School ... Wendel McRaven, an assistant track and field coach at Nebraska, appointed head cross country coach at Kent. He also will be an assistant track and field coach ... Scott Strand, interim head coach at Alabama-Birmingham, hired as head coach of the track and cross country programs at the school. Strand was an assistant at the school from 1992 to 1995.

FIELD HOCKEY--Meg Sheehan selected as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Earlham. She was an assistant coach of field hockey and women's basketball last season at Ithaca ... Nazareth named Kim Farmer as head coach.

FIELD HOCKEY ASSISTANT--Katie Russo hired at Colgate.

FOOTBALL--Elisha Harris appointed at Elizabeth City State ... Southern California signed John Robinson to a five-year contract.

FOOTBALL ASSISTANTS--Gary Roach, head coach at NAIA member Dakota State since 1989, hired at Elmhurst to serve in the new position of athletics recruiting coordinator and assistant coach ... San Diego State hired Ron English as cornerbacks coach, replacing LeCharls McDaniel, who resigned to join the staff of the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. English was a graduate assistant working with the defensive line at Arizona State the past two seasons ... Maine Maritime hired the following assistants: Ron Zangari as defensive coordinator/linebacker coach; Greg Youngblood as secondary coach; Mike Atkins as running backs coach; and Jason Bendekovic as offensive line coach ... Two former Knox football players hired as assistant coaches at their alma mater: Tom Rethman is offensive coordinator and Bill Allison is running backs coach ... Regis (Colorado) promoted assistant coach Michelle Goodman to co-head coach.

MEN'S GOLF--Mike Ketcham named at Oregon State, replacing Steve Altman, who resigned after five years. Ketcham had been head coach at San Jose State the past two seasons.

MEN'S ICE HOCKEY--Kurt Stahura selected as head ice hockey coach and men's soccer coach at Hamline ... Nick Russo appointed at Villanova ... Lake Superior State announced the resignation of Jeff Jackson, who became U.S. national hockey coach ... Stan Moore hired at Union (New York).

WOMEN'S LACROSSE--Meg Sheehan selected as head women's lacrosse and field hockey coach at Earlham. She was an assistant coach of field hockey and women's basketball last season at Ithaca.

MEN'S SOCCER--South Alabama hired Stuart Fitzsimons, a three-year letter winner at the school. He has played professionally and coached at the high-school level ... MEN'S SOCCER ASSISTANTS--Todd West hired at American. He was a four-year starter at George Mason ... Hartwick appointed Greg Brown, a two-time all-American at the school.

WOMEN'S SOCCER--Drexel hired Raymond Goon, head coach at Philadelphia Textile the past two seasons. The women's soccer program at Drexel is being reinstated to varsity status, effective in the fall of 1997, after a two-year hiatus ... Mike Haines appointed at Kalamazoo.

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL--Amber Warners returned to her alma mater, Calvin, as head women's softball coach and physical education instructor. She replaced Deb Bakker, who will continue as head women's soccer coach ... Deb Peffer hired at Allegheny ... Iowa State announced the resignation of Deb Kuhn ... North Central appointed Jason Cohen as women's coach.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING--Greg Carter named head men's and women's coach and director of aquatics at Calvin. He has been an assistant at Harvard and Trinity (Connecticut). Carter replaces interim coaches Deanne Fridley and Dan Baas ... Michele Mitchell-Rocha, the most decorated diver in Arizona history, hired to coach the Arizona men's and women's diving teams ... Northeastern Illinois announced the resignation of men's and women's swimming coach Brian
Vogel.

STUDENT-ATHLETE WELFARE--Mary Bowman hired at Utah as director of student-athlete welfare. She will oversee academics, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, career planning, and other
areas that influence the welfare of the student-athlete.

CONFERENCES

Tricia Harris, assistant director of information at the Big Sky Conference, hired as assistant director of media relations at Maryland.

Carl McAloose named commissioner of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. He was associate commissioner for public relations, championships and sponsorships of the Big South Conference. He had been with the Big South since 1992.

SEMINAR

The 1996 Women's Olympic Soccer Symposium for coaches of girls' and women's soccer will be presented July 20-21 in Orlando, Florida, by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, in cooperation with Umbro. The symposium is being conducted by the NSCAA Women's Soccer Committee to celebrate the inauguration of women's soccer as a medal sport at the 1996 Summer Olympics. NOTABLES

The College Golf Foundation named the inaugural Rolex/Golf Digest Collegiate Journalism Awards winners: Matthew Johnson of Northwestern, Luke Vilelle of Missouri, Sarah Hood of Dartmouth, Terry Scanlon of Virginia Commonwealth and Drew Martin of Mississippi State. The awards program was designed to recognize outstanding student journalists who have written extensively about college golf throughout the past year. The winners, selected by a panel of Golf Digest editors, receive monetary stipends.

The foundation also presented Capt. David C. Leestma of Navy and Leslee Suback of Dartmouth with the inaugural Rolex Achievement Awards for outstanding success in their chosen field, outside of golf, and making a special contribution to society. Leestma, winner of two golf letters at Navy, is an astronaut and served as mission specialist on the 13th flight of the space-shuttle program. He is director of flight crew operations. Subak founded and captained the women's varsity golf team at Dartmouth and went on to earn her M.D. from Stanford. She is attending physician for the Dysplasia Clinic and an instructor in gynecology of the preclinical medicine curriculum for second-year medical students.

Rene Portland of Penn State was selected as head coach of the 1996 USA Women's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team. She is assisted by Marianna Freeman of Syracuse and Kay James of Southern Mississippi. The junior team will begin training camp in August to prepare for the COPABA Women's Junior World championship in Cancun, Mexico, August 27-September 3.


DEATHS

Marvin "Lonny" Lee, a UCLA basketball center during the early 1940s and father of UCLA and NBA guard Greg Lee, died of heart failure June 8 in Newport Beach, California. He coached basketball and taught history at Reseda (California) High School for 31 years until his retirement in 1980.
