Washington appoints basketball coach
June Daugherty has been chosen as head women's basketball coach at Washington, replacing Chris
Gobrecht, who recently was hired at
Florida State.
Daugherty has been head coach at Boise State for the past seven years, compiling a 123-74 overall record and a
73-31 record in the Big Sky Conference.
Under Daugherty's guidance, the Boise State program achieved a number of firsts -- its first NCAA tournament bid,
a national ranking and a
regular-season conference title. At the conclusion of the 1993-94 season, Daugherty was named Big Sky cocoach of
the year.
Before her appointment at Boise State, Daugherty was an assistant coach at Stanford from 1985 to 1989 and an
assistant at Kent from 1983 to 1985. She
played at Ohio State in 1977 and 1978 and later played on and coached several international teams.
The first assistant coach hired by Daugherty is Mike Daugherty, her husband and an assistant coach at
Boise State. He also is an Ohio State
graduate and was a player/coach in South America.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS

Jason Lewis, assistant athletics director at Arkansas State, hired as associate AD/business manager at New
Mexico State, succeeding Angela
Throneberry. Lewis handled internal affairs and budget preparation and mangement at Arkansas State as well as
athletics facilities and scheduling.
Before that, he was athletics assistant for business and marketing and women's tennis coach at St. Mary's
(California) ... Brian Fogarty, head
football coach at San Diego, named associate director of athletics for development at the school. He succeeds
Ky Snyder, who became executive
director of the San Diego International Sports Council ... Judy McMullen appointed associate director of
physical education and athletics at
Lewis and Clark, where she will be senior woman administrator. McMullen was head women's basketball coach at the
school but resigned in April.
ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS
Charlie Wright named assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions at UC Irvine. He rejoins
the staff at the school, where he was
administrative and sports marketing assistant in 1993. Wright has been coordinator of corporate sales at UNLV for
the past two years ... Brian
Good, head men's basketball coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering, given additional duties as assistant
AD. Good will coordinate athletics
recruiting, monitor academic retention and oversee student-athlete academic progress ... Vanderbilt announced the
promotion of Rod Williamson
from sports information director to assistant AD for media relations ... Terry Prouty promoted to
assistant AD at Daniel Webster. She will
retain her coaching responsibilities and her duties as senior woman administrator ... Scott Cathcart,
assistant athletics director/media
relations at Long Beach State for the past three years, joined the athletics administration staff at Temple.
Assistant sports information director
Tony Gervase will replace Cathcart at Long Beach State on an interim basis.
COACHES
BASEBALL--John Griffith named to head the baseball program at Daniel Webster. He has been a coach and
administrator in the school's athletics
department since 1995.
MEN'S BASKETBALL--New Orleans head coach Tic Price signed a new five-year contract through the 2000-01
season. Price has compiled a 41-20 record
since his promotion to head coach in 1994 ... Texas Tech awarded head coach James Dickey a new five-year
contract. Dickey has a 100-49 record
and two NCAA tournament appearances in five seasons at Texas Tech, including a 30-2 record last season ...
Rick Ferry, a seven-year assistant
coach at Susquehanna, named full-time head coach at Juniata, succeeding Jim Zauzig, who has served on a
part-time basis since 1990. Zauzig
retained his full-time position as a teacher in the Huntingdon (Pennsylvania) school district.
MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Marshall hired Dave Dickerson and Gregg Marshall. Marshall was an
assistant at Charleston (South Carolina)
and has 11 years of coaching experience. Dickerson most recently was an assistant at Radford ... Tony
Barbee, Brian Cousins and Ron
Rutledge hired at St. John's (New York). Barbee, a 1993 Massachusetts graduate, spent two years playing
basketball in Europe and last year was a
graduate assistant at Massachusetts. Cousins was an assistant for the past three seasons at Manhattan and for two
years before that at Southern
California. Rutledge has been on the St. John's staff since 1978, when he was hired as a part-time assistant. He
was promoted to a full-time position
the next season ... Michigan appointed Scott Trost as restricted-earnings coach, replacing Jay
Smith, who took the head coaching position
at Grand Valley State. Trost had been head coach at Elmhurst since 1992 ... Joe Bryant announced his
resignation as an assistant at La Salle ...
UC Irvine hired Jason Levy as an assistant coach. He was on the staff at Long Beach State for two season,
first as an administrative assistant
and then as an assistant coach.
Robert Morris appointed the following assistant coaches: Glenn Gutierrez, an assistant at California
(Pennsylvania) for the past nine years;
Dave Pilipovich, an assistant at Georgia State for the past two years and at Florida Atlantic before that;
and Thom Holzshu, who was on
the staff at California (Pennsylvania) for five years as student manager, student assistant coach and graduate
assistant ... Rob O'Driscoll
hired at Manhattan. O'Driscoll was an administrative assistant for two years at Villanova.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL--Greg Bruce announced his resignation as head coach at Portland State. He has accepted
the head coaching position of the
Portland franchise of the American Basketball League, a new eight-team women's professional league that will
begin play in the fall. Bruce coached the
Vikings for 10 years and was named Pacific West Conference coach of the year the past four seasons ... St. John's
(New York) hired Charlene
Thomas as head coach. Thomas was four-year letter-winner at Auburn and an assistant at the school for the
past four years.
Lewis and Clark selected Missy Smith, a former Oregon State basketball and softball standout, as head
coach. Smith has been head women's
softball coach at Lewis and Clark for the past three years and will retain those duties. She succeeds Judy
McMullen, who remains at the school
as associate director of physical education and athletics and senior woman administrator ... Brian
Morehouse appointed at Hope, replacing Tod
Gugino, whose contract was not renewed. Morehouse has been Hope men's junior varsity coach for two years and
was a student assistant coach as an
undergraduate at Hope ... Tennessee coach Pat Summitt received a two-year contract extension through the
year 2003. Summitt began coaching at
Tennessee 22 years ago and has a 596-133 record and four NCAA Division I titles.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Manhattan announced the resignation of Jody Powell as assistant coach. She
moved to Charlottesville, Virginia,
where her husband is a member of the Virginia football staff.
FOOTBALL--Brian Fogarty, head football coach at San Diego, named associate director of athletics for
development at the school. Fogarty
relinquished his coaching duties after 13 years and a 71-53-3 record.
MEN'S GOLF--Lee Robertson, a longtime staff member at Western Kentucky, announced his retirement as head
coach, effective June 30. Robertson
directed the Hilltopper golf program for the past six seasons after coming out of retirement to coach the team.
He was director of alumni affairs at
the school for 25 years.
MEN'S ICE HOCKEY--Dean Talafous named head men's ice hockey coach at Alaska Anchorage. He has served as
head coach since 1989 at Wisconsin-River
Falls, where the Falcons have reached the semifinals of the Division III championship in each of the past four
seasons and won the title in 1994.
WOMEN'S SOCCER--Mark Krikorian, coach at Franklin Pierce for the past six years, hired at Hartford to
replace Austin Daniels, who
accepted the head coaching position at Colorado. Krikorian led Franklin Pierce to Division II championships in
the last two seasons and his team has
won its last 39 games. Last year's squad was 20-0 ... St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania) appointed Greg Nicholls.
WOMEN'S SOCCER ASSISTANTS--Dawn Jaffee and Timothy Lenihan hired at St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania).
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD ASSISTANTS--Shelley Mitchell hired at Manhattan. She was an all-American
in the heptathlon at Penn State in
1992 and twice was Eastern College Athletic Conference champion in the 400 meters. She has been an assistant
coach at Rider and Monmouth (New Jersey).
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL--Andy Read resigned as head men's coach at UC Irvine after four seasons. Read, who also
is a full-time high-school teacher,
cited time constraints as the reason for his resignation. He was an assistant coach for the U.S. men's volleyball
squad at last summer's World
University Games in Japan
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL--Mercer appointed Tracy Graham-Lester as head women's coach. She served as a graduate
assistant at the school last season.
Graham-Lester was a three-time all-Big Eight Conference performer at Iowa State from 1987 to 1991.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL ASSISTANTS--Jason Watson hired at Montana State. He was an assistant coach with the
Brigham Young men's program for the past
two seasons.
STAFF
ATHLETICS SCHOLARSHIP FUND DIRECTOR--Kristin Colon named director of the Golden Buffalo Scholarship Fund
at Colorado. Colon coordinated the
Buffalo volunteer network for the past three years.
ATHLETICS SCHOLARSHIP FUND OFFICER--Pam Samuelson appointed fund officer for the Golden Buffalo
Scholarship Fund at Colorado. She served during
the past year as an athletics development associate.
EQUIPMENT ASSISTANT--Rand Woolley named assistant equipment manager at Southern Methodist. Woolley was a
graduate assistant at Tulsa in 1995-96.
MEDIA RELATIONS ASSISTANT--Tom Weber hired as assistant director of media relations at Vanderbilt. He will
serve as publications director.
SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTORS--Vanderbilt promoted Rob Williamson to assistant athletics director for media
relations ... Jon Jackson
appointed sports information director at Southern Methodist. Jackson was assistant SID from 1991 until being
named interim SID last August.
SPORTS INFORMATION ASSISTANT--Tony Gervase, assistant sports information director at Long Beach State,
named interim assistant athletics
director/media relations at the school.
CONFERENCES
Marla Denham hired as assistant commissioner for officiating services for women at the Big Sky Conference.
Denham will be responsible for
recruitment, training, assignments and evaluation of all women's volleyball and basketball officials. She has
been a Division I women's basketball
official since 1987.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS
The Great Lakes Football Conference has been formed by schools that offer limited financial aid. Members are
Quincy, St. Joseph's (Indiana), Rensselaer
(Indiana) and Kentucky Wesleyan. The conference, which will begin play with the 1996 season, is seeking new
members whose football programs fit its
limited scholarship philosphy.
NOTABLES
The College Golf Foundation has named sophomore Tiger Woods of Stanford and freshman Maria Baena of
Arizona as the winners of its Rolex
College Golfer of the Month awards for April. Woods, reigning two-time U.S. amateur champion, won the individual
title at the Pacific-10 Conference
championships and played in The Masters. Baena captured the individual title at the women's Pacific-10
championships.
The Golf Coaches Association of America has announed the 1996 United States Select Team for the U.S./Japan
matches June 28-July 5 in Japan. Team
members are David Seawell, South Carolina; Scott Rowe, Northwestern; Josh McCumber, Florida;
Heath Slocum, South Alabama;
Ted Purdy, Arizona; Donnie Darr, Kent; John Curley, Florida Southern; Mike Porter,
Skidmore; Laura Philo, Wake
Forest; Heather Graff, Arizona; Dodie Mazzuca, Washington; and Erica Wycoff, Indiana.
Coaches are Mike Griffin of Auburn
and Renee Baumgartner of Oregon.
Vic Bubas, a longtime Duke basketball coach and the only person to participate in the Final Four as a
player (1950), coach (1963, 1964, 1966)
and administrator (1977), named the 23rd winner of the John Bunn Award presented by the Naismith Memorial
Basketball Hall of Fame. From 1959 to 1969,
Bubas coached Duke to three Final Fours in four years. He was appointed commissioner of the newly formed Sun Belt
Conference in 1976 and chaired the
NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee during the 1984-85 season.
The American Hockey Coaches Association selected Bruce Crowder of Massachusetts-Lowell as university
division coach of the year and Dean
Talafous of Wisconsin-River Falls as college division coach of the year. Ian Smith, a defenseman at
Middlebury, was named college division
player of the year.
DEATHS
Dan Washington, athletics trainer at Grambling from 1946 until 1991, died May 5 in Grambling, Louisiana,
after a long illness. He was 74.
Washington was a center on the Grambling football team in 1941 under coach Eddie Robinson.
Temple assistant basketball coach Jim Maloney died May 3 after suffering a heart attack while driving a
car in Philadelphia. He was 62. Maloney
was the father of former Pennsylvania player Matt Maloney, who was honored as Ivy Group player of the year in
1994-95.
Bob Drum, a longtime golf writer who was an all-American basketball player at Alabama before beginning his
journalism career, died May 8 in
Pinehurst, North Carolina, where he lived in retirement. Drum, who worked for CBS for several years in the
mid-1980s, was a past president of the Golf
Writers Association of America and his reports were published in virtually every major golf magazine.
Former track coach Ken Doherty died April 19 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was 90. Doherty led track
programs at Pennsylvania and Michigan and
was an assistant coach at Princeton.
