TRANSFER RULESCommittee suggests changing draft rule for JC athletes The NCAA Two-Year College Relations Committee has recommended that NCAA rules be amended to allow junior college student-athletes to declare their eligibility for a professional basketball draft without affecting their eligibility at NCAA institutions, provided they announce their intention to return to school within 30 days of the draft. DIVISION IIManagement Council appointments completed Appointments to the Division II Manage-ment Council Transition Team have been completed. Ten positions were elected or appointed by member conferences and approved by the Division II subcommittee of the Presidents Commission to fill out the 24-person body. The Division II Management Council Transition team is divided equally between men and women. Five are ethnic minorities, six are senior women administrators and five are faculty athletics representatives. Another 11 are directors of athletics, while two are conference commissioners. In a related matter, the NCAA Division II Steering Committee has approved a survey instrument that is designed to provide data that will aid the division's transition team in its decision-making process. The survey instrument, which also was reviewed by the Division II subcommittee of the NCAA Presidents Commission, focuses on seven areas: governance, membership requirements, championship structure, Division II finances, Division II financial aid, academic requirements and membership compliance. DIVISION I BASKETBALLNew deadline set for submitting men's ticket applications The deadline for submitting ticket applications for the 1997 Final Four has been extended from May 3 to May 16. Applications received by May 16 will be included in a random computerized drawing, which will be conducted by the NCAA in June. This deadline extension will not affect the mid-July date when applicants will be notified of the results of the drawing. Staff contact: Daniel A. Calandro.
INTERNETNew NCAA web site inaugurated April 29 The NCAA's official World Wide Web site is now available to the membership and the general public. After nearly a half year of development, including several months of design-oriented work, NCAA Online is operational. It can be found at http://www.ncaa.org. At the outset, the site will include general information about the Association, the text of The NCAA News, information about the NCAA Sports Library, and on-line versions of the NCAA staff directory and Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete. Visitors to the site will notice "under construction" signs posted for sections on statistics and championships, and the NCAA administrative database. A link to a search engine for locating college and university home pages also is included in NCAA Online. Sprint, an NCAA corporate partner, played an integral role in the development of the site. A link to Sprint's Web site is included in NCAA Online. The on-line version of The NCAA News features news stories, Comment, Briefly in the News, NCAA News Digest, the NCAA Record, and The Market.
